Pull a sample to test each week so you get an idea on the changes week to week. This should give you an idea on how long it needs. If changes are happening quickly then you may need to shorten the steep time. If not much of a change is detected then it may need a bit longer.

Good Idea there! If the tannins from the oak behave anything like the natural tannins from NET, it may end up imparting some unpleasant tones. Are you planning on agitating the barrel at intervals? I don't know if it would make a difference or not. Just figuring if the liquid isn't getting a mix once in a while, would the oak impart more of the flavor on the juice that its in contact with and not so much towards the center of the barrel?
I'm just guessing here...

+1

That new oak barrel could instill too much oak'e rich goodness quickly, I doubt it but who knows at this point.

Man I like the way you guys think. I'll pull a sample this Thursday the 30th in the morning in the name of science and take a picture.

Should I wait to give my thoughts so it doesn't blow the blind taste test? I think I will hold my thoughts but take a pic for everyone.

Haha I'll take a pic of the sample as it's pouring out of the barrel spout too.

You can tell us if you like or dislike the flavor, it won't affect our judgments as we won't know which is which.

I really like your enthusiasm.

Absolutely share your thoughts. Screw double-blind testing.

Haha tell you what. Anyone that wants my thoughts on it can PM me so we don't spoil the test.

This whole experiment started over the debate of barrel steeping actually making any kind of difference so I want to keep that going. See if all this extra money we pay for these barrel reseerves is worth it or if it's just the flavorings themselves.

Heck If you made 190ml of it to steep in the barrel (I seem to remember reading that). You can take out a few ml each week to sample and let it go at least 4-8 weeks to see what length of steep might be the best. While at the same time being able to enjoy it along the way.

Cheers,
Steve

Edit I was thinking along the lines that if you think each week tastes better than the last, to keep letting it go another week until you find it either getting worse or no longer changing. That way from now on you will know exactly how long to age it in the barrel. Just a thought.

You don't want to vape an oak barrel, you just want a tinge of oak. I think it would be really easy to overdo it, how much time it takes for it to be too much is still up in the air.

I'm sure after the first run Muggs will be doing further experimentation, personally I want to know soon as possible if this is worth pursuing.

I love tobacco and yet to find my Cuban cigar vape for lack of a better term, not an ADV but something special. Something akin to a fifteen year old bourbon whiskey or thirty year old single malt scotch.

I agree with you guys. I'll do one sample every Thursday for 3 or even 4 weeks if it keeps getting better. I agree we don't want to vape a barrel. Just want those special flavors, a unique juice. The non barrel is all I have been vaping for days. My first true adv. My sweet and tobacco fixes are taken care of.

I love cola too it's a quirk of mine. I might make a whiskey cola tobacco juice in the barrel for the next round if this works well. A Jack & Cola reserve?

Thanks for that info danny. I have a thing for whiskey cola and tobacco so I'm going to give it a shot. I never tried a beer tobacco flavor either. Like a lager tobacco mix. I thing there are a lot of us that like our unique and fun and flavorful tobaccos. We can make an entire line of man reserves haha. A dark Bock tobacco too you see where I'm going with this.

did you test it out yet?

in what?

No just an idea right now.

I just ordered some bourbon, whiskey and cola flavorings to make a whiskey and cola reserve. Might add a hint of vanilla too.

Where can I go to get maybe a good lager or bock beer flavoring? Also grabbed some 555 tobacco while I was shopping.
