Hi Muggs, saw your post in MBV thread so i jumped over here for some reading, hope ya dont mind! I am subscribing just so i can continue to read! The excitement and anticipation you all have is very notable even through text! It is refreshing to read when so many other threads are, well, sometimes a "downer" so to speak. So, call me a lurker i guess, but i am enjoying reading about your adventure!

Oh that is so cool Cheryl that is exactly how I feel about it. It's exciting and new and we are all a part of it really. Next Thursday the samples go out to the 2 members already selected for the blind taste test of the barrel and non barrel to get true unbiased opinions on the affect of barrel steeping. So glad you are joining the fun haha.

It's not going to be very blind with that color difference! :D

Hahaha Yeah it kind of seems that way hah? I think we all figured the barrel would be darker but at least you guys can post opinions on both and we will come to a conclusion if barrel or chip steeping truely has an affect on the juice.

Actually I know it does but this will be an opinion for the ECF community from it's own members I guess is the best way to look at it. Been on the barrel juice since yesterday.

BTW here is the easy recipe for this particular juice if anyone wants to make it.

(24mg 65PG/35VG) Nicotine E-Liquid - 24 ml - 450 drops 75 %
East Coast Tobacco - 0.9 ml - 18 drops 3 %
Coumarin Pipe Tobacco - 0.9 ml - 18 drops 3 %
Maple Rum Tobacco - 1.2 ml - 24 drops 4 %
Toasted Almond - 0.9 ml - 18 drops 3 %
Madagascar Vanilla - 1.2 ml - 24 drops 4 %
Brown Sugar - 0.9 ml - 18 drops 3 %

Totals - 30 ml - 600 drops
18 mg - 73.75%PG - 26.25%VG

Thanks for the recipe and for also trying this Muggs. I have a couple of questions about the recipe though: Are the ingredients all from the same company? And if so, who? If you don't mind me asking. Thanks again!!! :thumb: :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

The ingredients for this trial run were Mt Baker Vapor and I have to say I'm impressed. Went with them in case this whole thing was a flop but to my surprise it's just you have to try it good. My next reserve after I drain this one will be a Flavor West whiskey and cola. The Flavor West stuff arrives tomorrow. By the time that one is done I'm going to make a triple tobacco only juice, no sweets, it will pull all it's sweetness from the barrel and essence of the previous batches. Maybe Capellas after that. I want to see which flavorings work well with charred woods.

Pictures from start to finish so far.

Hey Muggs, thanks for sharing this! I am definitely watching this for my own DIY. :toast:

Here is a link for a place that has more barrel options, and they are cheaper, but not sure about shipping costs.

Oak Barrels & Kegs - oak barrels for sale, whisky barrel, wooden barrel, wood barrel, wine barrel furniture, oak cask, wine barrel

Thank you for that link. If anyone bought multiple barrels you could do a single barrel reserve and end up with 6 different flavors from 1 big batch. I'm dying to try various charred wood chips in glass juggs.

Ok I pulled the batch. Here is a picture of the final pour. It is very dark now and so full of flavor I don't want it to end up sitting too long. It's for the sake of the experiment which asks do barrels have an affect on juice. I feel we have reached the time where we can answer that. I also need to start the whiskey cola tobacco after a long soak over the weekend so it's just time now.

I'm going to mail dannyv45 and f1vefour their samples over the weekend, guys check your PM's.

I started with 190ml, I have taken a total of 45ml for testing purposes and the final pour yielded 90ml. So the barrel stole 55ml haha.

This is excellent! I wonder what the result would be if one steeped unflavored PG in either a barrel or canister with woodchips? Then used the resulting liquid as a flavor. Is it possible to distill PG? This could really be fun! Love watching this thread.

Bob

Thank you. That would probably be really good. After this whiskey cola tobacco is done I'm doing a straight tobacco that will hopefully pull some sweets from the barrel's previous batches.

Do you like the taste of the barrel steeped mix more than the bottle steeped mix (I'm assuming you do)? I can definitely see a big color change. Good Job Muggs!!! :toast:

Cheers,
Steve

Thanks a ton man this has been a blast so far. I like the barrel more because it's a bit "darker" in flavor, a little smokier, more of a throat hit.

The color change is amazing, I'm betting quite a change in flavor occurred in that barrel as well.

It really has and we have 2 ECF members that will voice their opinions in a few days. I'm dying to hear what you guys think.

We call that "shrinkage". You might need to put a lock on your barrel!

Haha shrinkage for sure almost 2 30ml bottle worth. Now like Wings said I need to figure out how to pull the juice from the wood and make a Devil's Cut, haha.
