Actually I like that idea. I'm starting a 5 sample mix set here in about an hour or 2. It's going to be whiskey, bourbon cola tobacco. Not sure if I should add hints of vanilla or cherry or anything else.

This batch is going in the barrel so I can use the seasoning from these 2 batches for a straight tobacco batch.

While I do the tobacco batch I'm going to get 1 bag of each of these wood chuncks from Western. Ebay seller has all of them.

· Jack Daniels Wood Chips

· Alder Wood Chips

· Cherry Wood Chips

· Orange Wood Chips

· Peach Wood Chips

· Maple Wood Chips

· Apple Wood Chips

· Hickory Wood Chips

· Mesquite Wood Chips

I'll char them myself and load up each type of wood in it's own glass jug. HJow's that for a tasty spread. Question would be do I use the same base liquid in each or use flavorings that compliment each type of wood?

I would use the same mix for each wood type so you have a baseline flavor to compare the different wood types to.

Yeah or maybe even unflavored. Maybe a simple tobacco only for each to see how the woods affect tobacco flavors. Lots of different ways to go here. I also was thinking of using amber glass bottles for the chips but the price on glass ball canning jars is becoming hard to beat for me. At least during this experimental phase.

What do you guys think of that spread of wood flavors?

I would think those will work just as well seeing steep time is not as long and light would not be much of a factor. They can always be put into a dark closet if light becomes a factor.

Exactly, I was thinking they will be in a dark cabinet anyway.

I don't know about mesquite, I don't see that one turning out good..too smokey.

The rest sound great.

Yeah I wasn't sure about mesquite, that would pack a punch I'm sure. I'm not familiar with Alder either.

I revieved the samples and it is review time.

The first thing I noticed was the difference in color so as far as a blind test that is out of the question. It was very easy to tell the difference.
I took the caps off and the pour tips and gave it a sniff test. Although they smelled about the same I did notice more of a richness and more of a sweetness to the darker vape. As far as consistancy the darker vape was thinner then the lighter vape but this had no bearing on vapibility.

The all important taste test

First the lighter vape

The first thing I noticed was the maple sweetness was right up front and tobacco taste was muted. I would say to back off on the maple and increase the vanilla a smidge as I really got no vanilla. There was a sweet smokey hickory note to it which is desired in this type of vape. The flavor was rich and there was no hint of harshness. Aroma was good but sweet. You could really smell the maple. In my opinion a bit overly strong. There was no hint of wood (Who'd of guessed:) )
It still in my opinion was a very good flavor combination and easyly could be an ADV (Excellent choice on flavor combination).

Now the dark vape.

This was a real treat and unique what I would consider a designer speciality vape. All the formentioned notes were there but much more blended and very smooth. The tobacco was more pronounced the maple was more of a back note, The oak woody note was very much present but smooth and mild (You timed the steep perfectly). The scent of the vapor was far more pronounced but at the same time very well blended and the scent of wood was very much present. Still the vanilla back note seemed to be missing but at the same time not needed (I am thinking that the vanilla although not detected helped in the melding and mellowing of the oakwood tone). The over all vape was more of a natural vape that you don't find with synthetic flavoring. THis ones a major ADV a real keeper. I hope you realize your first attempt was an over the top success.

This vape could be a best seller if sold retail.

EDIT: I am having a very hard time putting this one down. I may go through the entire bottle today:)
Every time I go back to the light vape it seems flat compared to the dark vape. THis dark vape just sings out with flavor.

I wish my mail would run, oh well it will be in the mailbox when I get home from picking the kids up from school.

Nice review Danny, now that you tested it does it concern you to never taste it again once your out

No because I hope Muggs will share his recipe with me so I can make it myself:) I feel the investment in the wood is well worth it. And opens a whole new world of experimentation.

Thank you for the recipe. Just to make sure I get it right. Who are the manufactures of the flavorings (TFA, Hangsen, Capella etc...) or where did you get them. Shopping for my wood supplies as we speak.

The flavorings were Mt. Baker Vapor. I'm working with Flavor West for the whiskey cola. I can tell already the Flavor West flavorings are much stronger.

Good looking out f1, looking forward to your review too. Danny friggin nailed the review that is exactly word for word my take on it. I'm surpised how far back the vanilla is when there is a lot of it. I think if I take the maple to 3% and up the vanilla to 5% it would be perfection.

I think it's perfection now I don't think you need to accent the vanilla any more then it is. I think the vanilla enhances the wood tone and any more may change that.
