Had my Heron going strong for a good 3-4 hours. It was gurgley, but then out of nowhere, boom...dry hit again.

I can't seem to get this thing built right. I mean, how does it make sense to be gurgling liquid...then give a dry hit? lol

Maybe your coil is choking the wick?

I don't think so.. Could be I suppose, but the wick is quite loose in the coil. Cotton/microcoil setups are all I've used in the past year almost, so I'm pretty good with them. And in the cotton-cap thingy...I have the cotton pretty loose in that hole as well. I think my problem lies somewhere with the length of the cotton "tail" touching the fluff, and the amount of fluff I'm using.

I also have Boba's Bounty in there, and that's some thick stuff. Maybe I should switch to a thinner juice until I get this thing figured out?

Try it without the topper, and keep both ends of the cotton relative short and thick. The length of the cotton tail and the density of the fluff are critical factors, you're right!

Don't use the topper with a cotton ball? Isn't that the point of the topper? Won't the cotton sag down without it? I like asking questions? lol?

The topper is useful for certain cotton builds and thick liquids need a good wicking, short and thick tails can work fine, it is a matter of setup :) The density of the fluff is a factor too.

Thick liquids require less fluff...try cutting off about 5mm...

I tried that once. It made the outer ring of the fluff gapped from the wall of the tank...if that makes sense. There was space between the fluff and the tank wall. I tried to move it around to 'fluff' it out to the wall, but then that made space between the inner air shaft and the fluff.

Thus why I think I'm doing something wrong with my fluff lol. Plus my cotton wick seems to slouch down after a couple of hours, and I'm not 100% that its touch the fluff correctly after this. Maybe I need more fluff...but wrapped looser, and a longer cotton wick? Idk. Trial and error I suppose lol.

I'm, using bobas' with 65mm of filler, 4 strands through a 5/32 .9ohm coil with just enough cotton pulled through to make it tight to the coil. Originally it was wicking a bit fast and I was sucking up juice, so I pushed the filler about 1mm past the mouth and trimmed my wick down pretty short. I made it to my first refill without any other incident. 2nd tank seems to be running more smoothly than the first and I'm wondering if it is b/c the filler has better saturation? I dunno. I hope you get it working to perfection soon.

That's about the same as mine then, StrikeIII. So that's not it, good to know. Thanks for the pic :)

And Hrather, when you say '4 strands through a 5/32' what do you mean? I'm guessing you mean you wrapped your coil on a 5/32 drill bit, but what do you mean by 4 strands? And by, 'pushed the filler 1mm past the mouth'....does that mean you pushed it away from the wick, 1mm past the bell?

Thanks for the tips guys, if you have anymore, keep them coming! I'm thinking you're on the right track for my problem, and someone will probably have my issue and find these posts useful :)

4 strands of the silica that came with it...then I rolled some cotton, doubled it over and pulled it in between the silica, just along the coil. And the filler, yeah, it is about 1 mm higher than the mouth, so the juice doesn't roll over the edge and into the tube.

Finally got to build my heron this morning, first build working great so far!

Word to the wise(er than me), the tank only goes on one way! I made the newbie mistake of putting it on upside down and struggling to get it together for a solid half hour. Live and learn :D

I am so glad I'm not the only one...:)
