I followed this thread religiously when I was trying to figure out what relatively inexpensive VV mod to buy. I first bought a Lavatube, but after sending the 2nd broken one back within 2 weeks, I bought a Gripper. I've only been playing with it for a few hours but so far so good. 510 connector is a bit wobbly, but the LT was much worse. Definitely much smaller than I had originally thought, which is good. I like the clicky fire button, but hate that the power button lights up when I fire. The plastic cheap feel doesn't bother me, since compared to the very heavy metal LT's I had, it works. It seems like it isn't totally flat on the bottom, which will be a problem with the Vivi Nova (already had it fall over as I turned away causing a minor coronary). The variable voltage, resistance check, short circuit protection, and the form factor are the real selling points. So far, for less than the cost of a couple of Twists, I'm pretty happy.

I too am really liking the Gripper. Have had it for at least a couple weeks and so far no issues. Even had a tank leak and it didn't fail. I only dropped it once, a couple feet on carpeting and it was fine. i like the way it feels in my hand and this is someone who has only used slim auto batts for 3 years :)

Me too, if I ever have to open this thing, I will check to see if I can turn this off, probably just a wire to cut.

A few posts back I said that the battery door is hold by 2 small plastic thing on each side and I had one of them broken. Actually I was wrong, there 2 plastic thing on the side holding it but there's also a third one in the middle (which just broke on my Gripper!). I now only have 1 plastic thing to hold it but it's still working lol I'm at 9 weeks with it, not bad :)

I've been messing round with coils for my vn's trying to find what works best for my jus and gripper. I haven't picked up my stick bats (ego's twists) since I got the gripper, I really love this thing. Right now I just can't be unfaithful to my new beloved.
My best set up so far is twisted legs -32g Kanthal A, 7 wraps (coil made on toothpick) 2.3Ω, I wind cotton thread round the double legs of coil, this helps a lot. It works just as well on a 1.8-2Ω cotton wrapped twisted leg coil. BJ43's idea.
I use 2 4cm lengths of DMC natura crochet cotton 8ply boiled , no need to put a pillow on top the coil anymore, works great, no shorts, zero harsh hits, zero burnt jus, excellent flavour /vapour. Now my vivi's and gripper are pure vaping heaven!
I'm happy!

although, next on the list to try is vn on gripper with spin-e coil, this should be fun!

So tempting, 24 to go or 2d 19h but I'll pass, I'll take the chance that my Gripper will still be alive in the next coming months, thanks for sharing!

I picked up a 2nd one the last time they had them on sale in case I break one. So far I've dropped it several times on to my hardwood floor and although it has come all apart I've been able to put it all back together each time.
I have several VV Mods including the new VW ZMax but for comfort of use I prefer the Gripper. I use the ZMax quite a bit though because I like the VW setting. If I didn't have the ZMax in a lanyard pouch I would probably vape the with the Gripper more than my new ZMax simply because it is lighter and more comfortable to hold and vapes good as well.:)

I have to thank all of you guys!
I'm subscribed to this threat long time now and i've got my Gripper 10 days ago!
Must say that i'm lucky:No wobbly connection, the housing is decent and the battery door is far better than expected.

WOOOOOOOT

That's great VapDrak I'm glad you are liking it too!:toast:

Hi people...I got a gripper maybe a month ago..sent one back because the connection was too wobbly, and got another. Over time it too became wobbly. I opened the case and glued the connector and put it back together. Now the door doesn't stay closed all the time because one of the guides in the door track was chipped. I love the ease of the electronics and performance...as much if not more than my zmax or other high end mechanical mods...but the case just sucks.

All the electronics could be easily removed. I thought of trying to put together a wood, or aluminum box of the same size as the gripper...but I just don't have the skills. I wonder if anyone has tried this...or is a madder or wood person that could create a wood mod of the same shape (minus the finger grooves which I don't need). I thought about just getting another but im sure the same stuff will happen.

This is my favorite project box...
Project Enclosure (3x2x1) : Project Boxes | RadioShack.com

My mod has a pair of 18350s in it.

Excellent find Cool_Breeze;)
Will this box take 18650's?

I'm going try the modeling shop for some balsa wood and try making a prototype box, if successful fiberglass cloth and resin should strengthen it, should work ok. Should being the operative word. DK.gif

Two answers... 'Yes,' and 'probably not.' An 18650 will fit within the box, but leaves little room for electronics and perhaps a connection and fire button at the top. Radio Shack does offer an inch longer version at 4x2x1.

Altoids box!

I thought about that and maybe I'll give that a shot. I am not sure how I will cur the windows for the buttons...and isolate the connections in a metal box. But it's worth a try, as now it is inoperable...the battery door just won't stay shut. I'll look into the project box as well. Wish they would just come out with an aluminum version of the gripper.

I got a few tins in a tin candy frenzy...altoids, Newman's own, and a smaller square one. I know it's doable...but it's sad, because the feel of the gripper is better than the squarish tin. If I could figure out how to secure the door...I would go with that first. Maybe I could drill through...and use a pin rather than a screw.

I do like the idea that if I have to use the tin...to put the buttons inside...and will if I have to...but I am constantly hitting up/down/check battery. I think I just like to look at the screen :)

This mod would be more up my alley due to its smaller profile but it seems this suffers from voltage inaccuracy just like about every other chinese mod. :(

Not sure the cost is justified either considering it's basically $10 worth of hardware packed into a cheap plastic casing.

Don't think I'm EVER going to find a battery replaceable mod that is highly affordable, accurate, and well built. lol
