The recipe is good , I was looking for a coupla things and he nailed it . The shortening and room temp milk are critical .

With your seal of approval, I shall proceed. As soon as I pick up the ingredients. I never use powdered sugar, whole milk or shortening. :)

This guy’s site seems to be worth exploring more.

this one sounds really close to what I do... I use

1/2 cup water for yeast and 3/4 cup milk to mix
( let milk come to room temp as yeast is foaming)
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 tsp salt ( if your salt sensitive substitute baking soda)
2 tblsp shortening melted ( I use Crisco)
3 cups flour
15-20 drops of Madagascar vanilla
1 egg ( large or jumbo)
and... peanut oil ( cuz thats what the wifey buys)

and, when rolling the dough out, dont mash it too hard try to keep it puffy soft ( your not making pizza dough ;) )
I also like to let the dough "rest and puff" a bit after cutting into squares. When cooking, the idea is to "seal" the outside as soon as possible to keep the air in them so they puff up really good :)
a good bignet is mostly air ;)

Wonderful! Thanks for this! It’s funny you said about not making pizza dough. The sourdough pizza dough I make I learned to never roll out since the first time I made it. The recipe says to roll it, but it ended up too smushed and dense. Instead, I lovingly shape it by hand so as to preserve all those airy little bubbles in the dough. And IMO a good baguette is also mostly air. :)

hmmm... the dryer decided to start "playing it cool"... after a couple of hours of searching the internet I found a semi partially ok description of the symptoms... seems that the flame sensor has died ( a 40ish$ part)
for some reason people think that the owners manual is a repair manual... ummm NO! its not, telling one how to use a dryer is totally different than telling you how to fix it. and pop up adds galore.. there were several sites ( obviously hosted by the same company) that you had to subscribe to to get movies, magazines etc before you could even download the info one needs... imagine all the junk mail... o_O
and the "Ask a Professional" pop ups... 28$ just to get an answer to an issue your not even sure about... hell, if you can ask the question well enuf you already know the answer cuz youve discounted all the other potentially linked problems to start with....:glare:

if people and companies need to resort to this type of "tactic" to earn a living, they need to change jobs...:grr:

Dryers used to be relatively cheap, and they seemed to last a long time. These days, they are not cheap at all and they seem to last about 5 years.

I'm old enough to remember when you bought a refrigerator and expected it to last you for many years. These days, I only expect to get 7 - 8 years from one.

And all the useless "features" they add to them drives up the cost.

Very funny Hula. Have you ever seen an ice box? My dad bought one a long time ago. I think it is in good enough shape to be used. Now where to get that ice? The corner store carries ice, but not the blocks like they used to use.

Well, I got up early this morning. 6am is before daylight, and that is not my usual time to get up. (unless I need to go to the restroom of course) All I can say is, today is the big day. More details later. Happy Labor Day y'all!

The idea was to cut blocks from the winter river ice and stack them in the ice house. It would last all summer long. Then you could use this ice for your ice box. Works great up north. Not in Texas so much. :)

Good morning Army! Enjoy your labor day.

You might've guessed by now...
I'm a grandmother! My daughter is doing very well, and the boys seem to be just fine. What a relief. They are both adorable and they have a good amount of hair too. You can definitely tell they seem to look alike. I didn't get to see their eyes open yet though. One baby was about a pound and a half bigger than the other one. They were close to the same length though. I just cannot believe how cute they both are. I think you are going to be able to tell they are twins, at least at this point.

Thank you. I am very excited right now. More than anything I'm just so thrilled they all seem to be okay, and healthy. That is the main thing right at this time for me. I enjoyed hearing everyone say who they think they looked like. Some said my daughter, some said her husband, and one said one of the boys looked like my son. I dunno for sure. I see a little of both parents in the boys. I cannot wait to see their little eyes. They didn't care for the light. They seemed very content though, and I hope they are as easy as twins can be, for my daughter's sake.

Congratulations, Grandma (X2)!!!!!! How wonderful. I’m so happy for all of you. And thankful that everyone is healthy. Now the real fun begins! I hope you’re plotting ways to spoil them. ;)

You’ll be that rarest of grandmas —-> the one who can teach them how to make their own fishing lures. :D
