Now my cellphone died. Has nothing to do with the new battery. It has plenty of power. Worked fine last night. Charged up overnight. Worked fine this morning. Then it just stopped inputting no matter what I did. Wont even let me slide the power off to reboot. Did a hard reset several times. It does that, but it doesn't fix the problem. Called tech support, they're baffled. Going in later this afternoon and likely coming home with a new phone. Just hope I have my stuff backed up to the iCloud. Can't even go online to see because I need an authentication code to get into my account and it is sent to my iPhone that I cannot open.
I hope this works out. That is somewhat humorous, in a mean spirited way, about iCloud sending authorizations to a defunct phone. I never trusted clouds, as Judy Collins sang decades ago, 'clouds get in the way".
Backups, if it ain't local, it ain't real. In my never humble but often erroneous opinion.
I hate to say it CMD, but the tech world has us by the short hairs. We can fight for our privacy all we want (and I do) but in the end they have the upper hand. I try to limit my exposure where I can given the time and ability to do so. But sometimes I simply tap out and surrender. I have my new phone (went from i8 to i12). It's updating the software now. Trying to restore my stuff from the iCloud but I still do not know if I have backed up to the iCloud. I'm known for disabling such intrusive avenues to my life.
Two-factor security does have its downsides. Some logins will offer to send the code to your cell number or your email if you give them one. They also often have emergency recovery codes that you can print out for just such a scenario.
I don’t recall whether iCloud has either of those because I back up my phones to my computer.
You might be able to access your i8 via usb as though it is an external hard drive. But if the phone doesn’t provide the “Allow” unlock pop up, your PC won’t be able to get access. In that case, you could try via iTunes on your PC, but it’s a long shot.
The phone dies after all that time and care. Ugh. Sorry for the hassle and the hit to your wallet.
Yeah, it’s shot. Even the phone guy said it was RIP. Tried going thru iTunes. No go. Doesn’t even recognize the phone. As for getting a code I checked. They had a few options but still needed a phone that wasn’t as screwed up as mine. No email option I was hoping for. Gonna get rid of that two step authentication if they let me. No one can benefit from my worthless life.
My phone was, indeed, backed up on the iCloud. Good thing I didn’t wager on it cuz I woulda lost. I was leaning toward disabled. So reloading my new i12 was a piece of cake. One time I’m glad I didn’t let my paranoia get in the way. The thought of reloading all my contacts, data, and apps was putting me in a foul mood.
Insane timing like this is what makes a lot of Apple haters believe that Apple has intentional fails built into in their tech to prevent us from getting more mileage out of their products than Apple wants us to have. Open up the device you paid (too much) for to replace a part and BOOM!
The i5S we replaced the battery in is still going strong though.

Over many years and many puntings, I eventually learned to be careful with handling my e-cigs. It’s rare for me to drop it these days. Those lessons are transferable to my phone as well.
