No offense to anyone, but Lori is our resident Queen Geek, and if she says stay with Windows (and Big Brother Barry) then I guess that is a good start. Besides, even with Chak's help I am not sure I could get the hood up on this thing.
Gears and Asphalt I know. Programs and Processors are someone else's Game. Hell, I never even took keyboarding (thank you, backspace).
Yes, Hula, I at least figured out what 'backspace' is used for. With a little help for the Kids and Grand kids, of course,

Papaw , LA herself would switch over if she didn't need Windows for her business , but it's probably best to leave things alone if you're that unfamiliar with it . I've been building my own computers for quite a few years now and I'll wind up rebuilding this one from the ground up , so it's second nature for me and BK as well but probably not for most people , it can be intimidating starting out .

The free upgrade period for Win 10 is about to end. July 31 I think. So they decided to force it. Bad move for an otherwise decent version of Win. Some people are so upset they turned off all updates. They will not get critical security updates which is even worse! It's a mess.

Papaw & Retic, let us know how the changeover to Linux goes. If my career didn't require apps that only run on Mac or Win, I'd be ready to switch.

Kkay, I sure wish you could send that rain our way in CA & NV. It's skipping the West and dumping on you. Stay safe!

Ooh, not having security updates is asking for trouble. I'm happy with OS X and Macs - still run windoz in a virtual machine on the Mac if I need it, but it slows everything down to snail pace. It's such a resource hog!

Evening..... Loaded the Merlin with Legend last night and vaped it some. Seemed good but I'm sick right not so not a good judge. Anyway I closed the controls and set it aside for today. This morning I find most of the tank leaked out. By the time I got the Fuchai and the tank cleaned up it was time to go to work. So I refilled the Lemo2. I need to inspect the O-rings and rethink my wicking. Right now I can barely taste and vape anything. So until I starting feeling better the Merlin will just have to set here and look pretty. Hopefully by Saturday.

That's the same CPU I have in my machine , but mine is a desktop , Cinnamon was too graphics intensive to run cleanly on my machine and laptops usually throttle down the CPU speed when running on battery to extend battery life So I would go with Linux Mint 17.1 xfce 64bit . It has support for older CPU's and graphics cards and it's an easy upgrade to 17.3 . Linux Mint by default retains it's graphical stack and Kernel when upgrading , Ubuntu doesn't , that's important when you're running older hardware like ours . After installation make sure you install all updates for 17.1 before you upgrade to 17.3 . This is the version to start with .

Morning.... A trip to urgent care and back home for the day. Work wasn't happy but they'll get over it. Respiratory infection of some kind. A few antibiotics to help what I'm already doing and I should be good. Now if my head would stop feeling like I've been on a binge.

Ooh, I'm just getting over one of those. Don't skip doses on the antibiotics. They need to be updated ever 6 hours or so depending on the type (could be 12 hours) If you miss a dose, it's like starting from scratch.

BTW - That pic looks edible - greens on the bottom a blob of dressing then more greens on top. I mean it looks surreal after too much editing.

Retic, I tried running a Linux live off of a usb flash drive. It wasn't doing right for me. But that was months ago. Now I hear you have to be able to disable the secure boot in some of the newer Windows computers. Some computers won't let you disable it. (maybe you could if you were a computer geek) I am not looking at doing this until things settle down around here.

The weather is so bad here in my state. I am praying I don't have to evacuate again. TX, LA, and OK have had enough rain. I am about in panic mode right now. (again) Today I hear next week we have more substantial rain on the way. The movie Waterworld comes to mind.

Stay safe KKay. Have you ever thought about a move - maybe to Thailand? (I think we have less rain than you guys are getting now and we get a lot. LOL)

I just read about the army truck swept away in a flood at Ft. Hood. Three were killed, six are missing.
I saw a pic of somebody's land, where their house was on a tiny piece of dry land, surrounded by water. There were horses standing next to the house. They had nowhere else to go. I can't remember what town that one was in. I also read about flooding in Germany. Glad your family is safe. One story said the flooding started in May. Actually it started in March. Then it flooded again in May. Now it is flooding again in June. I don't think I've been this ready for dry weather since I was a kid.

Retic, I am not prepared to face a major operating system change right now. In the future when things have calmed down, I will give it a go.

I swear, Thailand is the place to be! Google "flooding Thailand" or just "rainy season Thailand" and check out the images.

One nice thing about a move into a new house is that the lines aren't laid to get internets or television for another few weeks, so I don't have to worry about any red x's for awhile it seems. (Although my data usage on the mobile account is definitely reflecting the lack of wifi in the house.)

There are some , the problem is gonna lie with machine specifics , starting with how to change the boot sequence in the BIOS and going on from there , most tutorials aren't in laymans terms , yet another hurdle to jump , this is gonna take some time to ferret out the info needed .

No offense taken, but I used to teach computers and how to install/use apps. It was strange teaching on Windoz machines from a Macbook.

I agree with Retic on this, Papaw. BTW, this is the post I was referring to earlier. I used to teach computers and when I first started using them in 1999 I built my second and all subsequent PC's from scratch. Can't, practically, do that with most Macs unless you have an old Mac Pro Tower.

Ok, Kayfun original (forget what version the first ones were) is recoiled @ 1.48 ohms and cooking a DF Jiggy mix. It's pretty close to 50/50 mix with just a tad more DF than Jiggy. An interesting taste, to say the least, still to early to comment on it though. The flavors haven't married just yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll do a review.

You can . Installation is straight forward , once you get it installed you will see an icon in the bottom right corner of the screen that looks like a shield with a blue dot in it . Click on it and it will open your update manager , click on install updates and it will ask for your password , type in your password and it will update itself and refresh itself , presenting you with more updates to install , same process , but it'll take awhile to complete , after that's done you can play around with it or you can click on edit at the top left of the update manager you'll see the option for upgading to 17.3 , same process again , upgrade , reboot and you'll have to open the update manager and get the updates for 17.3 . After that you can hit the menu button in the lower left corner of the screen same as windows , click on system then scroll down to software manager click on it and it'll open a window and youcan start looking at apps to install , you'll find Firefox in the internet section of the menu if you want to go online . Linux Mint xfce functions the same way Windows 7 does , you should have no problem in navigating the menus . holler back once you get it installed . I'll have links and suggestions for you .

I haven't really had any significant problems with Windows. The best move I made was a few years ago when I finally wised up and got off of Internet Explorer and on to Chrome. My internet experience improved dramatically.

I didn't have any issues operating Windows but after turning this machine on , going through the updates and searching and downloading antivirus , antispyware , antimalware and registry cleaner software , I had picked up 5 pieces of Malware , one Trojan and several hundred tracking cookies , and the time spent scanning and removing that crap , I was seeing red , had enough and I ain't looking back , it's a relief not to have to deal with that crap any more .

Seriously we have a gathering of geeks here coming from the various angles of geekdom. Lots of good advice to benefit from.

I just write the code that makes computers do stuff. I can work under their hoods. I've taught how to use them and done tech support. One thing I know is that no one knows everything. It's too big a topic. Team effort all the way.

I sure would. The one thing that's held Linux back from wider adoption is that installing it is tricky for the average user. It's much much better than in the past. I'd love to see them keep growing and making it easier.

Your code can be light years ahead of anyone else's. Better stability, performance and security. But if install and update isn't completely automatic, only geeks will love it and use it. #1 rule of GUI (Graphical User Interface) -> Don't Make Me Think.
