yup. it's a whole different OS.
But don't worry, it can play your music, videos, browse the web, open your docs and so on.
It has Office (LibreOffice instead of M$ Office) and basically everythig the every-day user needs. (And much more)

However, if you rely on some special Windows-only software - or just to be safe for a start - you can keep Windows next to Linux. You can then decide which OS to run every time you turn on your PC/Notebook/Whatever.

Great to hear that Linux finally makes it in the "mainstream PC users" world. To me, being a software developer for as long as I can think, Linux is normal since the nineties. I've really lost touch to Windows since version 7 or so. XP was the last Win I (had to) used productively.
And now, my relatives think I'm stoopid 'cause I can't help them with their everyday Windows problems any more. "you da PC wizz, you always been. You just don't want to help" :D
Sounds good. ...

Agreed as well :) I love'em both.
Mac OS is veeery similar to Linux.
They're both Unix derivatives and they both extensively use (or are founded upon) GNU free software.
And imho they're both much safer and more efficient than what Redmond provides :)

On to vaping:
That SS Provari has hit my Boston guy :)

And HHV shipped my order :)

And if the Greek vape gods are good to me, UPS will bring me a Golden Greek Proteus* on Friday.
Vape budget exceeded by far this month - screw you FDA! :)

* thin "electromechanical" tube mod with TC - as Imeo puts it; 14500 battery, no display, just a four-colored LED and a button; no wires, "chip" slides in like a vertical kick; will let you know how it performs and looks

You mean this Linux is a whole new operating system? Like no more windows?

It gives you a choice upon installation to do a dual boot setup , It gives you a choice which operating system you wanna use on startup. I did that initially , but after running Linux and Windows for a coupla days I reinstalled with just Linux and got rid of Windows , Linux is just as easy to use , does everything Windows does without the constant BS and maintenance attached to Windows .

There is a program you can download for Linux called Wine that lets you run Windows programs on Linux , If I wanted to play games ,I'd probably setup Linux to run alongside Windows and just use Windows for games until I made sure I could run them using Wine on Linux.

Mac has that same option. I believe I have Win 8 installed and can run that if I want to play video games. However, I haven't used it in such a long time I'm sure next time I start it up it's gonna take a day just to download all the updates and install them.

In fact, I can run Windoz in a separate window while still running OS X. It eats up a lot of RAM, but can be done.
The same thing can be done with Linux , it creates a virtual machine to run Windows on , but the only use for Windows is running games and I have a PS3 for that so I 86'd Windows entirely , don't miss it at all .

If you decide to play with Linux , I'd recommend downloading the Opera browser , I found the version of Firefox that comes with Linux Mint to be glitchy , Opera's been trouble free . My wife's been having trouble with the latest version of Firefox on Widows 8 and reverted back to an older version but she mostly uses Opera as well .

When I started this computer up with Windows it took four hours to download the updates just to get to sp1 then another coupla hours to finish up after sp2 , then the hunt for antispyware ,antivirus and antimalware and downloading that crap and having to scan the computer after every online session not to mention the constant popup garbage , enough already .

Exactly! I bought my 17" MacBook Pro back in 2006 and it's still running fine. Only one problem, the battery pack started to swell so I had to trash it and nobody stocks those old model batteries. Now I just plug it into a power source and it works fine. The usual life span for a computer is 4-5 years then you gotta start replacing stuff that breaks down. The only thing that broke down on the MB Pro is the DVD drive - now I use an external DVD.

Since this is a desktop system , I can replace everything in it , including the motherboard and cpu , I usually do but it's doing what I need it to do so it's more than adequate for my needs now .
