I'm surprised the article made no mention of using the technology in electric vehicles. At present, the bulk & weight of the batteries is one of the huge negatives to their widespread acceptance.

Yeah, it would be neat to have an 18650's power in a device the size of a standard 510 battery.
But, would you pay 10x as much to own one? <insert smiley here>

Of course, in relative terms the price might be the same. Instead of buying a pack of ten batteries, you would only need to buy one. The article emphasized the increase in longevity more than an increase in output. Or the same output as current batts in a smaller size. It might be like fluorescent light bulbs—the initial cost is more but the darn things last for years and your electric bill goes way down. Give me a PV batt that only needs to be recharged once a year and, yeah, I'll pay $100 or more for that.

@sjct: $100 for a battery that only needs to be recharged once a year, sure. But, even a large capacity 18650 won't vape for a 10th of a year, more than a month on a charge. Depending on how much you vape, a full charge might last 1-3 days. Multiplied by ten, that's a month on the outside (light vaping) not a year.

On the other end of the scale, a standard 510 sized battery but with 10x the endurance. Now you're talking about a day or two of vaping on a single charge. At 10x the cost of a standard 510 battery?

It would be nice to have the option. And, if it were ever developed surely the price would come down over time. It's interesting to think of the devices which could be improved on, and new devices which aren't presently practical due to battery technology presently available.

I want a netbook or notebook I can charge before leaving on a week long vacation, and leave the power supply at home. :) But, the battery might be the most expensive component, LOL.

That would be great for the tax people - now I can tax your flashlight, your iphone and ipad- using tobacco products. Will it have to get pass the FDA?. And what temp range will it work in, to hot(summer on the beach or left in a car), to cold, waiting in the mailbox? And what happens when a battery leaks, are those little buggers going to infect something else....
