Haha, very funny.
My ISP bill is in the last resident's name. She is a published website designer that makes boatloads of cash. Even with $200 a month "business class" service, satellite internet is almost as bad as dail-up and often worse. Sorry, on this particular issue I have no sense of humor left.![]()
I'm at about the same point. We have moved into a new estate which is supposed to be on the national broadband scheme - fiber optic, so there's no copper wires to the house for telephone or internet at all. I rang up to get the phone and broadband sorted out as soon as I got here and was told that the service was not in my area yet. Huh?
After about two hours on the phone I found out that the fiber optic line is to the house and I can have telephone, however the infrastructure for the broadband is not in place yet. Of course my next question as to when this magical infrastructure would be in place was met with the response "It's under construction" No date, just "under construction". It could be next month, six months, years. If the government changes hands at the next election it could be never, because one of their running policies is to throw the National Broadband Scheme (which is supposed to drag us kicking and screaming into the 21st century) in the garbage can.
In the meantime I have a wireless broadband dongle with a 3Gb for $20 for the month. The signal is so bad that it frequently drops out. When the kids get out of school at 3PM and for most of the weekend the speed is down to around 2kbits per second, if I'm lucky. Forget about streaming content, it takes me 10 minutes to watch a 30 second YouTube video. Usually, the speed drops to a few hundred bits per second and I get about 30-40% packet dropout on ECF. That's when it's time to go and do something else.
I could probably get a "premium" service for $200 per month but I'm buggered if I'm going to give them more money when the signal is so poor and it's unlikely to make a heck "of a lot of difference.
I'm off to McDonalds for a latte and a bacon and egg roll. They have free wifi and I need to update a computer so that it can use the wireless dongle, and do some work. Watch how slowly I drink that coffee.
