What am I missing? I'm reading that their conductive properties are similar....
Code:
	                    Nikrothal alloy Kanthal alloy
Hot resistance (Rw) 3.61 3.61
Cold resistance (R20) 3.44 3.41

Every comparison I've seen suggests that they're fairly comparable conductors, but that kanthal lasts longer.

Yes .... I see your point.......I was looking at the surface resistance:confused: on this andymetals web page
Molybdenum Tungsten Tantalum Niobium Titanium

The table you provide shows as you say...no difference :)

Resistance should be the same for both. This is only one measurement, max temp shows how much the alloy will take before it vaporizes (this is when the coil "pops"), hot strength is how much weight it can hold when it's glowing red. Kanthal is superior in both of those and it's lighter and has no nickel so those that are allergic to nickel don't have to worry about it. One thing about nickel too is that exposure over time can make people allergic to it who were not before. Lots of things that people are allergic to actually have that same trait.

That said, I prefer kanthal because to me it colors the flavor of the juice less and it lasts longer and stays cleaner than nichrome. In other real world applications, there are situations where each alloy is superior so in the end it is the choice of the user what they prefer. In my experience, for vaping, Kanthal is the better choice. Some prefer nicrome. In the end they are both very inexpensive so it would not hurt to buy both and make your own decision.

Nice :)

My motivation to learn this atty building comes from having to return to Ireland in the late summer. As you guys see in the threads, there is not a whole lot of vaping going on in Ireland. On the UK Vaper forum I have only one other friend from Éire....so you get the point. I want to be self sufficient while in Ireland and not have to worry about obtaining the one critical component. I shall build my own :)

No worries, in the ned, it really is not that hard or complicated. Once you have done 2 or 3 of them you will be a pro. Just remember to try not to overcomplicate it and you will be just fine :)

These Katana Mods look beautiful period and I wish I had a picture to post for the veiwing pleasure, however I am working on that. Thanks to all who have shown theirs and thanks to all the helpful posts.

Now being new to vaping and it like everything else I do I tend to dive in head first, my first pv purchased was a Prodigy V3.1 @ 6v and I really like it, the dependability and being all mechanical in stainless. I am using Boge cartos currently and use a a different carto for each flavor so as to not cross contaminate tastes. Now keep in mind being new I dont have alot to compare to but I feel going this way saved me money since I was able to bypass alot of the other steps along the way.

I am hoping using a Katana with a Genisis type atty and tank will take flavors to a whole new level but without experience I have to rely on research and that is always not enough since each person is different.

So here is my frst question, what does everyone do when they change flavors ?
Can you clean the tank with syringe and hot water as POC suggests and burn the old flavor off and your ready for a new flavor or do you have to make another atty and keep one for each flavor ?

tyia

Those look Great,
If you could pick just one based on ease of use and performance which one would it be ?

Thanks for the instructional posts they help me tremendously to understand

Good question echos .... that helped me also.

Another couple of questions - do most folks only oxidize the wick just around where the kanthal will be, or do you oxidize the entire wick? (I saw 1 vid doing the whole thing)

Can you make and store oxidized wicks in advance? They won't sour or anything will they? (store for say a month or 2)

Thanks for all the info guys! BIG help!

I dont remove the coil i just flush out with hot water do a dry burn to remove excess moisture and refill.

I was hoping to hear that and to me it makes perfect sense to be able to do this. Over a period of time this Katana would actually begin to pay the user back by not having to purchase atties or cartos. Albeit the time would vary for each person but by taking care of it and going from what others have said it should be around for years.

Thanks for the correction on the term "coil" instead of when I said atty in this circumstance by the way, much appreciated :toast:.

you can oxidize the whole wick if you choose it will make the first 2 or 3 tanks discolored. Most people just do the top portion.. I would say from the advice i have been given aswell as experience that making the wick is the most important part.

I have been vaping on my dual coil wrap for just over a week now and its still rocking like a champ not bad for about .25 cent :)

Yes you can make and store as many as you wish.

The Katana is definitely my current favorite. The iAtty is nice, but both the hybrid mini and katana far outperform it. The G-tank is great but it is a cool vape so for some flagrant it rocks and for others it need more kick which is why t sits on the provari :)

The GLV3 is bulletproof. That one goes with me when hung might get a little rough. It can take bumps and laugh it off. The Katana is also super durable and survives in my pocket without any complaints, I just don't want to get it all scarred up ;)

Typically you only oxidize the part the coil touches, but if you like to chain vape or you use really thick juice, oxidizing the whole which does increase the wicking performance.

You can make and store mesh wicks indefinitely. If you ever have a question about one, just urn it up with the torch.... Instant sterilization ;)

Wow nice coils, it may show that I'm just beginning with rebuildables, but how is that dual coil not shorting?

That's the point of oxidizing the wick... It prevents the outside of the mesh from being conductive so that current has to flow through the entire wick.

I never even thought of trying dual coil like that, but it makes sense that you could just turn a second wire with the first and then make sure that they don't touch in between... you have to make sure that the single coils don't touch in much the same fashion, or current is going to 'skip' a coil.
