Hey vap, doing well and always finding you here for help and advice. I'm using my Vamo mostly and will make a 1.5 to 1.8Ω coil. I have 28, 30 and 32g kanthal. What size wire do you recommend and should I make a tight coil or one spaced out and what will be the best coil diameter for the cotton? Thanks for helping

I agree with finagle, if wanting those resistances the 30g is best, also 5/64 works really good. now if you want to go down to like 1.3ish, then the 28g imo is better. also I really like a tight coil because it allows for more wick coverage.

Is there any point where the Kanthal will begin to degrade? I've been quietly using the same coil for 3+ months and was interested to see the convo about coils. When mine needs cleaning I'll use a little H2O2 (like one drop per burn) and the coil is nice and shiny again. I'm just curious if there is something I should be watching for that would give me the heads up that it's time for a new coil. TIA

A coil that small will work ok? I'm using silica in my kayfuns now and I'm wrapping a double 2.5mm wick. That looks pretty big compared to a 2mm coil.
I know you didn't ask me, but I can speak to this. I'd recommend 30AWG wire for getting that resistance. Use a 5/64" (2mm) drill bit and do around 8 or 9 wraps tightly spaced. You'll be right in your butter zone.

That same setup with 28AWG would give you around 1.1 to 1.3 Ohms for reference.

perfect all around coil. I did one a couple weeks back about the kayfun. its not what I had originally thought of but just a basic kayfun type video. I had a few other kayfun videos but changed some of those and deleted others, I eventually didn't have a basic one geared towards vv devices. this one has 3 basic coils that can be used at medium resistances. you know originally I wanted to do one that was geared towards power, like if someone wanted a cooler vape, or a warmer vape but tbh it seems to me that whatever set up I have made in my kayfun they are all fairly close imo. my so called lightest vape is a 1.5ish at 14 watts, and if I compare that to my heaviest vape (a 26g, .9ish coil at 20 watts) the vape is not that much different. now maybe if I vaped in the 8 to 10 watt range, I could show differences between coils and such between that and the 20 watt set ups but I really never vape below 14 so I couldn't really say. anyways here is the latest one...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_5tJwK8CUk

Perfect basics video. I will be sending that out for sure. Are you still using 26 ga for subohming or have you given up on subohming?

I do 30ga, 2mm ID, 10 wrap. Gives me about 2.0 ohms. Works very nicely on the Provari. I've done 28 ga at 2.4mm ID I've done silica, cotton, more wraps, less wraps, different IDs, on and on. Truthfully, I find the differences negligible. I did do some 28 ga with small diameter to go subohm on my Neme mech and there are big differences there. It was a much warmer vape to be sure plus a longer dwell time to get up to temp. I'm a cool vaper so the extra warmth was not to my liking. Subohming is simply not appealing to me and I know I am in the minority here.

Mine is 5 mos old (about 3mls per day). I believe Finagle said his is 6 mos old (was that Fnagle?). Coils can last a good long while. When does it need replacing? I'd say when it no longer fires (LOL) or you find your resistance climbing rapidly. If you started at 1.8ohms and now it's at 2.5 ohms I'd say your coil needs replacing.

Ricks, some folks wrap 1.5mm ID's...particularly those that are subohming. I have a 2.0mm ID w/four strands of 1mm silica. Seems tight but the wicking keeps up just fine.

I just got 1mm silica in the mail yesterday. Going to try cotton tonight to see what its all about in the kayfun.

I rewick and dry burn every refill. For most of my ahlusion NET juice, it can last longer but I just like rewicking and dry burning.

Burping out loud using Tapatalk

Some NETs I use require daily re-wicking, others last a week. I go with "flavour". It tells me when it needs to be changed.

How often is everyone changing out their cotton on these? With gennies, I was changing my cotton every other refill. About 4ml worth. I fill my kayfuns with 4ml from empty. How much do you use?

Cotton, silica...all one's preference. Pros and cons to each. Good that you try them both to see what you like. Cotton can be replaced easily, silica can be dryburned. Taste, some swear by cotton, I can't tell much of a difference...just me. As for cotton vs silica and when to change...there's not a lot of difference between the two. Some juices are gunkier than others so your durability will be affected accordingly regardless of wick media. Clean juices you can go 8 - 16mls. Gunkier ones 4mls. I have some gunky NETs I can't even get 4 mls on and kind of renders the standard tank size on the Kayfun useless.

no I still use the 26g and is still my fav. I use 2 lites kind of like in the video and the other 2 I use sub ohm but not by much. both subbers are in the 1- ohm or slightly under. I really like a 13 wrap of 26g on my dna-20 mod, with that much coil it can handle all 20 watts easily and produces fantastic flavor while heating up pretty fast. whether sub ohm or ohms in the 1.5 range and with wire gauges ranging from 26g to 30g there really isn't that much difference imo, the vapor, TH, and warmth are fairly close, the only thing I can really notice is the thickness of the vapor. with thicker wire and higher watts the vapor just seems thicker or denser. In another kayfun I have been running a dual coil in it at .8 for the past couple weeks, the flavor is awesome but its weird, to me its not as warm as single coils so I removed it.

the info you kind of asked before about resistance and coil diameter is really what works with cotton, as for silica, not sure cause I really don't use it, I suppose a silica builds diameter in general is going to be bigger. so if your going to try the cotton build tonight, use a diameter close to 2.0 or 5/64, for me personally my fav is 1.8mm. use either the 28 or 30g wires and an average of 10 wraps. sort of thick tails but not too much within the coil. all wraps touching and the coil about 1.5ish mm above deck.
