Hey vapdivrr, out of curiosity...what setup are you running or rather, whats your favorite setup for the
kayfun? Also, do you think it works better with the coil perpendicular to the deck or on an angle like the ones in the recent pic you just replied to? I run a 5/64 dia 28g 1.4 ohm coil run perp to the deck with cellucotton, but I'm thinking of maybe a 1/16 dia micro with 29g angled with with cellucotton. It seems like the angled coil would take longer to wick because the wick is longer and in the sort of S shape.
I have 4 kayfuns, 2 are lites and 2 are pluses. one is on my provari at 1.3Ω with twisted 32g around 10 wraps. all my kayfun coils are between 1.7 to 2.0 mm in diameter. I have 2 other kayfuns that I run on mechs, one is 26g, 8 wraps and the other is twisted 30g, both of those are sub ohm. my last kayfun is on a dna-20 mod with dual twisted 32g, this resistance is also sub ohm about .9ish. so my wattages range from 14 to 20. all of these kayfuns are fairly close in performance tbh, the only real difference is the dual coil kayfun, for that one puts out a little thicker vape then the others. I have tried a ton of different coil designs and there is not a real difference between them so I stick to regular horizontal micro's. I also have tried a few different types of cotton and I prefer cvs sterile balls. every kayfun I own, at those power levels work flawlessly with the cotton, I never get one single dry hit nor any muted flavors. sometimes, maybe one out of every 15 builds in the kayfun, I will get an off build. what happens is after inserting new cotton and cleaning everything up, and filling back the
juice I will go to vape it and one of two things will usually happen. one is an instant taste of muted cottony crap, this taste is instant (even with a fully saturated wick) and I never go further, I instantly rip it out and re-do. I don't even take a second vape because I know this taste will not usually go away, no matter what. this taste is usually the result of to much cotton in the coil. for me, when my set up is perfect I never get any break in period of a cotton taste, the first vape is as good as the rest. dry hits? like before, maybe 1 out of 15 builds will have some sort of issue and unlike the "over stuffed coil" an under stuffed coil is just as bad. now the "not enough" cotton coil isn't as quickly noticed because of the major saturation I do to the wick before assembling. once this saturation is vaped, I listen to my coil. I can tell by sound usually if I am soon to get a dry hit. every coil will produce a slight sizzle sound after the fire button is released, usually this sizzle is not that loud or that noticeable and stops maybe a second after the release. when this sound seems louder and continues for a longer time, I know that fairly soon I will encounter some dry hits. 99 percent of the time I re-coil immediately, but there are times when this build was done late at night and I said f---it, I will mess with in morning. sometimes the wick will swell overnight and all is fine but that's rare. although I have done many successful perpendicular coils, I much prefer an angled coil for 2 reasons. the first is it allowes me to make a longish type coil that sits with no tension on the wires. sometimes if you have a longish type coil and set it straight, the length is longer then the screws and when they are attached, this puts a pressure on the coil which kind of kinks it. by setting the coil on an angle, the coil rests better. another reason I like the angled coil is that I feel like there is more wick in contact with the juice because there is more wick on the ledge. this may or may not be true because I really don't know how far the juice comes in, so this is just an opinion. also because of the way the wick sits on the ledge in an angled coil, I feel that the wick is there to stay and will not move no matter what. this may just be an other opinion but I feel if the wick is just dropping straight down, barely touching the ledge, it may move or something? either by incoming juice, or by sucking to hard. again, this is just me over thinking things, as it may never happen but I have heard once, I think it was donnah, that her friend vapes so hard she can suck the wick tails straight up. so tbh, I don't have a favorite set up, I really love them all for they are all actually fairly close. I haven't tried the cellucotton but am currently doing the rayon in a couple of kayfuns. so far I have mixed feelings, I like everything except 2 things so far. one is just the way it feels, it feels squeaky, like its plastic or something. and im not kind of liking the extra sweetness that I seem to be getting. the rayon does wick faster but I never needed extra wicking capabilities in my cotton builds. also some are saying it doesn't gunk up as much? so far its only been 3 days so I cant comment on the longeveity of the fibers and coil condition. here again, my juices aren't really gunky juices so usually I can go about 4 days on most. lets say with the rayon I get 5 or 6, well I enjoy changing and working on my attys, so that also doesn't bother me. for me, its all about the taste, and so far I think I am liking my cotton better. although I do run an angled coil, my wick tails really don't run across the ledge. they kind of run half way like my pic below, but when I saturate them, I push them against the ledge so more of the side of the tails are exposed to the juice
