Monday evening it was raining pretty bad late at night, so when I was having a little vape break before going home I decided to stay out of the smoking area, and instead was a few dozen feet away where there was some shelter so I could vape without getting soaked. Even though I know there is no legislation (or university policy) against using e-cigs anywhere, for the consideration of others and to avoid offending people, I still stick to smoking areas. This is the first time I've used it outside of one on campus, but as I said it was only because it was raining.
Waiting to be picked up, a woman, who I assumed was faculty, passed me by and gave me a dirty look. As she walked off, she got on her cellphone. I didn't think anything of it, but a couple minutes later campus security rolls around and confronts me, saying I am not allowed to use narcotics on campus and they would arrest me if I did not leave. I don't know if it's like this in the States or anywhere else, but in Canada, security officers on private grounds have the power to arrest anyone and press charges.
I tried to explain to him that it was just a flavored nicotine solution, and that it was an electronic cigarette. Midway through explaining that it was harmless, odorless, and that there were no laws against using one, he stopped me and wouldn't have any of my explanation. He concluded that I had moments to leave campus, or he would forcibly detain me. By this point it stopped raining to a light drizzle, so I decided to heed his words and just leave.
Thought I'd share this story. Some people are really ignorant and won't even hear your explanation.
