You did the smartest thing by leaving. It's just not worth the hassle. In the US that wouldn't happen. The campus police(not security) could search you and see that it is only a pv. They wouldn't even let you leave. I personally go to a small private college, they don't even have security. I vape in class all the time. My classmates think it's a little weird or funny, but nobody really cares. If it came down to it though, I would just avoid confrontation like you did. I learned a long time ago to pick my battles wisely.

Wisely said, and good advice. But I would still follow it up with trying to talk to someone higher up the food chain.

@ Groovy - Like I said I would still try to follow up. Big difference between smoking something illegal, against policy, or whatnot on a campus or outside of a designated area.

The least that could happen is nothing. If there is no policy in place there is no way to tell what will happen to the next guy. You might even try to draft up a policy for vaping and submit it to the university folks. Nothing outrageous like being able to drip and vape in class. Put in the draft something about being able to vape outside, not necessarily in smoking areas (but add that it is encouraged).

All it takes is for one responsible vaper working with the administration to try to work towards a fair and balanced policy.

We have to stand up for ourselves and not be a d-bag at the same time. Helping out like this not just helps others in the vaping community it also helps try to set us apart from smokers.

Just my 2 cents, for what it's worth.

Man you Americans are ..... whipped. North and south.

In America being a dissident means an invincible paramilitary force will drag you to prison and kill you with machineguns if you resist. Americans are "Pistol Whipped" not "..... Whipped" just thought I might clarify that for you because nobody from your land would fare any better under these conditions.

That really stinks man. My campus decided to ban all tobacco product from campus, so they wont allow e-cigs either. I still use mine all the time and if they ever asked I could just say there's no nicotine, not like they can test it. I tend to stealth vape unless I'm outside though. I'e had a few experiences on campus.

Funniest one: I was sitting in my ecology lecture (I sit up front) while my professor was going on about her power point. I always stealth vape, but this time a little plume came out just as she was looking. She looked stunned for a minute and in a half surprised half confused gasp she asked "Are you smoking!?" My friend next to me started cracking up and I pulled it up to show here and told her it was an electronic cigarette. She laughed a bit and said "oooh" and carried on with her lecture.

Another time I was in the food court walking towards the elevator with another vaping friend (we were both using ego-Ts at that time) and some woman stopped and smiled and started asking us what flavours we were using. Was unexpected, but we ended up having a nice little e-cig discussion.

Also was using it in one class (a fluxoizer) and a guy asked me what the heck it was. I can't blame him, the clear ce2's do look a bit shady haha.

Monday evening it was raining pretty bad late at night, so when I was having a little vape break before going home I decided to stay out of the smoking area, and instead was a few dozen feet away where there was some shelter so I could vape without getting soaked. Even though I know there is no legislation (or university policy) against using e-cigs anywhere, for the consideration of others and to avoid offending people, I still stick to smoking areas. This is the first time I've used it outside of one on campus, but as I said it was only because it was raining.

Waiting to be picked up, a woman, who I assumed was faculty, passed me by and gave me a dirty look. As she walked off, she got on her cellphone. I didn't think anything of it, but a couple minutes later campus security rolls around and confronts me, saying I am not allowed to use narcotics on campus and they would arrest me if I did not leave. I don't know if it's like this in the States or anywhere else, but in Canada, security officers on private grounds have the power to arrest anyone and press charges.

I tried to explain to him that it was just a flavored nicotine solution, and that it was an electronic cigarette. Midway through explaining that it was harmless, odorless, and that there were no laws against using one, he stopped me and wouldn't have any of my explanation. He concluded that I had moments to leave campus, or he would forcibly detain me. By this point it stopped raining to a light drizzle, so I decided to heed his words and just leave.

Thought I'd share this story. Some people are really ignorant and won't even hear your explanation.

Hope you got his name. File a complaint with the school, attach all the documentation regarding e-cigs.

I would consider this harassment if for no other reason he refused to even listen to you.

Stand up for your rights.

My experience with the police is that if you annoy them they will find ANY reason to "drag you in" maybe to "test" your juice, either way you're spending an ...-load of time doing nothing.

To the original poster: Stay calm, but get names, write letters if you get no response to that write the school paper and contact the other media--it works.

Cannot wait to order my Boba's Bounty and Gorilla Juice; I've been trying to order 200ml for the past 3 days =(. Atleast now I have a fighting chance after reading this! I go APE.... without my Gorilla Juice lawlz. And I'll light sabre a bitz when i'm jonesing for a hit-a-that boba.

- However I was lucky enough to get 60ml of HG before the ordering frenzy began; so I'm actually quite comfortable for a little while longer ^_^

Not to hijack the thread but I think the Occupy movement--agree with it or not--demonstrates that many people are willing to stand up and challenge authority.

"Not many left that will stand up and fight for what is right. I try but no one stands with me."

I agree with your view; one of the things I'm noticing more and more are people who are comfortable knowing they are living beyond their means while Interest rates and inflation go up, and salaries flatline. There's this huge movement in the corporate world to brainwash people into accepting a lifestyle that benefits the few in power while slowly turning the middle and lower class into pigs for the slaughterhouse. It's an age-old scenario that has just been cloaked in "democracy." A joke if you ask me. I also love the notion of the 2nd amendment being uneccesary.

Oops I did it again; I rambled like a lunatic...Doh!

Yes and no. On one hand it is always good to see the people push back. On the other hand, think of how far things have progressed in order for the OP to face such a problem.

I don't know if it's like this in the States or anywhere else, but in Canada, security officers on private grounds have the power to arrest anyone and press charges.

Not sure, but I thought "private" grounds have the right to ban electronic cigarettes, or pretty much anything they want. University, business, private, government, whatever....If they don't want it on their property, they can ban it. It's not illegal to vape where I live, but if a business or whatever tells me to "put it out", I can't really argue. I can try to peacefully explain to them what it is I'm REALLY doing. And hope they aren't closed minded, or just plain ignorant. But you don't really have any rights when it comes to private grounds.

It really sucks this happen to you. But if security tells you to stop, or tells you to leave, you have to abide. If you refuse to put it out, or refuse to leave if told, I would think legally they could press some sort of charges (trespassing to say the least). All we vapors can really do is, arm ourselves with as much knowledge and information as we can. So when ever we get into situations like this, we can try to educate the people telling us we "can't do that here". Try to read and learn as much factual information of electronic cigarettes as you can. Try to find the "real" facts about it, so you can actually have a good logical argument when you are in that situation.

And always be as peaceful & passive about it as you can. Don't let emotions get involved with it. If they still don't want to listen, or just can't really wrap their head's around the "it's water vapor, not smoke!", just let it go. Your'e better off just letting it go for the time being and just don't use your PV. Never try to force it on anyone (I'm not saying you did). Just prepare yourself with the knowledge.

Also, after gathering as much good information as you can, request a face-to-face with the dean or somebody of authority. Try to explain what it is you were doing, and ask that he/she make a specific ruling on electronic cigarette use on campus. Be prepared to give him/her some good facts/studies printed out, from credible sources to help your side. And in the end, if the ruling is banning ecigs from being used outside the "smoking areas", you'll just have to let it go.

My suggestion might not be what you were wanting or expecting to hear, but consider it. The more truth we know, the more we can try and spread it. And if people don't want ecigs on their property, that's their right. Hope that's of any comfort or help? Sorry if it is not. :(

Merry Christmas!

I'm not sure what rights he has here. I don't think I would call it "harassment". If the campus has a rule against using ecigs outside smoking areas, there's not much you can do. It might not be illegal to use a PV, but it doesn't necessarily give us any "right" to vape where we want.

Yeah you need to stand up for yourself when you can. But don't think you have a "right" to vape on campus, just because their is no state or federal laws against it.

Just my 2cents :2c:, but my money is probably no good here...

.
EDIT: Sorry for posting back-to-back in this thread. I probably could have used a multi-quote there.

Not going to Play The Devil’s Advocate here because I hate getting Flaming PM’s on Christmas Day.

But…

How was the Security Officer to Know if you were Not Using a Narcotic?

very apt question. that's exactly the issue. call me crazy but i will only use a pen cig out of the house. why? because there are some first class nitwits out there. "oh my god there is a guy with a big drug pipe!"

i'm glad the modders are pushing the envelope on the tech. god knows if we left it to mass market chinese manufacturing this never would have taken off. but bear in mind that appearance has a disproportionate impact on acceptance.

That is Definitely a Possibility.

While I might not Categorize all those who cannot Identify an e-Cigarette from a Drug Pipe as "Nitwits" at a passing glance, chances are Most of the General Population Cannot. I'm not sure I can.

The example of the OP's is a Classic example.

On a Rainy Night, a Women observes someone hitting on Something. She can tell it isn't a Cigarette. And she does not want to confront an individual who may be under the Influence of a Controlled Substance. So she keys down on Campus Security and they roll up on the Individual.

E-Cigarettes have been out long enough that I can Almost Guarantee that Campus Security knows what an e-Cigarette is.

But what they Can Not Determine is what Exactly is inside the Cartomizer/Atomizer. Is it a Controlled Substance? Is it Nicotine? Something Inbetween? No Real Good Way to know.

So they take a Zero Tolerance approach and ask you to Leave.

----

Many Members in this thread take the Attitude that Campus Security is Pushing People Around or Hassling People who are doing Nothing Wrong.

But How in this Case does Campus Security know that the only thing in an e-Cigarette's Carto is Nicotine and PG?
