You are SO rude! And you have no argument to what i said, cus its true...Cant you see, you are encouraging people to let the dark in their lives define them and everybody else, instead of letting the good be the focuspoint? Maybe why depression is nr 1 illness in the world. You gave the joke power and pulled it out. Made several people feel bad, when they shouldnt.

Fine be that way.. live in your dark place.. Thnk you for ruining my day and this thread.

I am CHOOSING not to argue with you. Not becasue what you said is true, but becasue I can't MAKE you see it any other way. As I'm sure you'd say the same about me.

So lets just agree to disagree.

In the meantime, keep it clean, as our new moderator Red has said as well.

there is no need to stop the jokes, just dont post any racist jokes.

So drop it, and lets get back to having fun. Personally, I like one-liners. Much better suited for quick reading in forums.

I'll start things off:

1.) I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

2.) Women might be able to fake orgasms. But men can fake a whole relationship.

3.) Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

Was it something I said?
Michelle, I typed a long well thought out response to you 3 times and the forum ate it. Anyway I like you a good bit, here in bloog and what you've contributed in the other forums too. I do have to wonder if you don't quite get race relations in the US where most of us are. I have no idea how things are in DK, I have traveled a fair bit in Canada and it is certainly different there. The FACT is that jokes, as well as the stereotypes and slurs they often play off of have been used intentionally and unintentionally to aid in the oppression of many here, from religious groups to women people of color and non-straight sexual orientation. There is no getting around that, and to those that see that, there is no funny there. I'm not sure why you don't get that popeye's stance is a valid one, even if you or I don't fully agree with it, it is very obvious to me that it is an earnest perspective that ruins nothing and causes no harm.

The amount of wit and cleverness that goes into a joke is irrelevant. Surely it is there or the joke wouldn't be perpetuated, but that doesn't make up for the association MANY here have with such jokes. Thinking people who know each other well enough to have trust and nuanced dialog can discuss such things, but frankly, none of us here are that close, and the medium doesn't lend itself well to personal nuanced communication. Not to mention even if we knew that the offender isn't attempting to perpetuate the oppression, on the internet there is no way to know who reads it, and what associations they may have reinforced.

In real life I'm rarely initially offended by crude jokes. I have had MANY good discussions on sexism, racism, homophobia etc that started by someone telling an offensive joke. I also have a sharp tongue, a quick wit, and on a few occasions, a strong arm, and have resorted to all of these to return the humiliation to someone who insists on making offensive comments. I live in the south of the US, where racial tensions are high, queers are regularly assaulted, women battered, minorities killed in the streets by police with impunity. I KNOW that some people can respond to these things with healthy humor. But I also know that others perpetuate these things with theirs. Popeye's perspective is a perfectly understandable response to not wanting to have anything to do with something that might reinforce such things.

Of course anything can be offensive to someone, and there is a level of pc-ness that is absurd to concede to. I could take offense (note that I'm NOT) to his quip about men faking relationships, largely because I feel that it reinforces a very negative gender role on men, and it personifies an attitude that does effectively enculturate males not just to miss out on many wonderful things in life, but to expect it as part of being a man. The lack of a connection many men in this country have with their friends, their partners and their children is saddening, but even more insidious is that they don't know any better and think that is just what being a man is like. But the fact is that men aren't being driven out of this country for being men. Law enforcement hasn't been targeting men for generations, and no states are currently enacting legislation to officially sanction that harassment. Men aren't being intentionally attacked, robbed, assaulted, or financially exploited by people who know we don't have equal protection under the law. In my part of the world, "mexicans" can't say the same thing. Under such circumstances anything that can be seen as perpetuating a negative stereotype against them is IMHO suspect. Not bad, but suspect. In order to avoid having walls of text like this in a joke thread, why can't we just make a friendly agreement to leave suspect things out so we don't have to get into serious discussions which although important, aren't very funny?

Sorry for not dropping it popeye, but the forum has literally been eating my posts all day!

I'm against protesting but I don't know how to show it.

A severed foot is the ultimate stocking stuffer.

You know they call corn-on-the-cob "corn-on-the-cob" right? But that's how it comes out of the ground, man. They should call that "corn." They should call every other version "corn-off-the-cob." It's not like if you cut off my arm you would call my arm "Analog." But then reattach it and call it "Analog-all-together!"

I used to do drugs. I still do, but I used to, too.

Ms. Michelle this is why I love scandinavia. Better music (King Diamond is Danish, Emperor Norwegian, Babylon Whores Finnish, and Opeth Swedish just to name one from each country), friendlier people, and the understanding not every little thing is racist.

Racism still exists because there are people who think everything is racist. They can't let it die.... They give way too much power to words.... It's just a word. It amazes me how we are supposed to be the country of free speech but we want to censor people.... Politics ruin everything....... I'll end it there because I can type for hours on this...........

Here's a joke

There's this country where people are supposed to be free and have a voice in what their government does, indeed according to it's constitution the government is supposed to serve it's people....

Popeye, I was offended at the arrogance of your post. Without specifying a target audience you imply to any reader that you have a greater cultural awareness and sensitivity than they do. You establish by virtue of your own words your own sort of "racism" whereby those that are more traveled or aware are greater than or better than those who are not.

And then you have the gall to post three jokes that are offensive:

1.) I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn't work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

***I am Christian. This is offensive to me because you are insulting my God and implying that God is other than ineffable.***

2.) Women might be able to fake orgasms. But men can fake a whole relationship.

***I am a man. I find this offensive as you are belittling a man's role in a relationship. I personally have a very loving and giving relationship with my wife. I do not, nor would I ever, fake a relationship. You are perpetuating a stereotype.***

3.) Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

***My brother has a learning disability. He has only read one complete book in his life. His vocabulary is very small. In conversations he often lapses in "drunken party" language because that is when and where he is most comfortable. To many listeners, he comes across as dumb. What would you call my brother if you were to hear him?***

You see, if you say that you can't say "those jokes" because they offend people or yourself, then you can't tell jokes. Otherwise, you are merely a hypocrite.

Isn't it a matter of common sense?
I mean, would you post jokes about Hitler and the jews? How about some comic 9/11 episodes? Japanese people in a tsunami? *
There's no frontier line drawn in humor and fee speech is a fundamental value, but...

"Isn't it a matter of common sense?"

That's actually the point I was trying to get to.

"I mean, would you post jokes about Hitler and the jews? How about some comic 9/11 episodes? Japanese people in a tsunami?"

No. No, I wouldn't.

"There's no frontier line drawn in humor and fee speech is a fundamental value, but..."

I agree and understand all that the "but" implies.

***To ensure that it is clear: I was not arguing for the telling of hateful jokes or perpetuating racial slurs.***

Analog... it is because we dont get oversensitive about words.... Offcourse we have had bad things happen here too. But i would NEVER think it appropriate to start ranting about it in a joke thread. Calling other peoples inputs crap. That is small minded, selfrighteous and plain ignorant.. Cus it is a matter that is allmost impossible to discuss as we can see here. It is keeping the hate alive as Morandir so eloquently puts it..

Theres no white and black here, just alot of shades of grey. No one can decide what is too much and what is not, so pointless to point out jokes that offend you. Just gives it more power, and if you guys walk around having to be careful everywhere, i feel sorry for you guys. I couldnt live like that and neither should you...People killing eachother over meere words?? thats insane...Land of the free??

Morandir: glad you like it over here, Ive been jealous over alot of things you cant do here, but can in the US.. but now im thinking id rather be able to walk down the street and not have to worry about what i say..

among the sea shells
A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA loan for a client.
He was told the loan would be granted if he could
prove satisfactory title to a parcel of property being
offered as collateral. The title to the property dated
back to 1803, which took the lawyer three months to
track down.

After sending the information to the FHA, he received
the following reply (actual letter):

"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan
application, we note that the request is supported by an
Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner
in which you have prepared and presented the
application, we must point out that you have only
cleared title to the proposed collateral proper back to
1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be
necessary to clear the title back to its origin."

Annoyed, the lawyer responded as follows (actual
letter):

"Your letter regarding title in Case No. 189156 has
been received. "I note that you wish to have title
extended further than the 194 years covered by the
present application. I was unaware that any educated
person in this country, particularly those working in the
property area, would not know that Louisiana was
purchased by the U.S. from France in 1803, the year of
origin identified in our application. For the edification of
uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior
to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which
had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The
land came into possession of Spain by Right of
Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain
named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted
the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the then
reigning monarch, Isabella. The good queen, being a
pious woman and careful about titles, almost as much as
the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of
the Pope before she sold her jewels to fund the
Columbus expedition.

"Now the Pope, as I'm sure you know, is the emissary
of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. And God, it is
commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I
believe it is safe to presume that He also made that part
of the world called Louisiana. He, therefore, would be
the owner of origin. I hope to hell you find His original
claim to be satisfactory. "Now, may we have our damn loan?"
