(My apologies if this is posted in the wrong forum...I couldn't find a Janty Stick-specific forum.)
So I had a Janty Stick v2, and was loving it...for about three weeks. Then one day I was charging it, and I smelled that familiar burnt electronics smell. It definitely seemed like it was coming from the Stick, but when I fired it up, it seemed to work just fine. In fact, it seemed to be working better than ever...it was like I was running a high voltage device.
But when I plugged in the USB cable, it didn't charge. I tried it on a different computer, and it still wasn't lighting up to indicate a charge. So I thought, "Huh, the USB recharge circuit must have fried. Well, that stinks, but I really like the device, so I guess I'll just have to recharge the batteries manually, and carry a few around to get me through the day." So I took out the dead battery in the Stick, put it in the charging unit, and popped the spare battery in the Stick. It lasted about half the day, so I switched to my backup mod.
When I got home, I decided to see if the Stick was somehow putting out higher voltages. While I had the multimeter out, I decided to check the battery....1.1 volts! 8-o
No way was I going to recharge a battery that had dropped that low, so I went to get the other battery that had been charged on the manual charger. Then I realized I had no idea how low that one had gotten, so I'd have to get rid of that one, too. At this point, I'm realizing something has gone seriously wrong with the unit, and there's no way I can keep using it. Since I bought the Stick on clearance with no warranty, I decide to take it apart and see if I can spot the problem. Well, that turned out to be fairly easy...there's a chip that's burned and melted, right in the center of the board:
It's hard to see with my low quality cell phone camera, but it's the medium-sized chip that the switch wires connect to. It looks to have five leads on it.
So here are my questions/concerns:
1) If you get a burning smell, I'd suggest you immediately stop using the device. If it's still under warranty, send it right back, along with the battery in the device when it failed.
2) Is this a known problem that has happened to others?
3) If it is a known problem, does the Stick v3 carry the same risk? I really enjoyed the stick when it was working, and I'd like to pick up another, but if this is still a danger...well, I don't know. Maybe I wouldn't get the new version, or maybe I'd pick up extras as spares -- I really did like the device.
