Welp, I decided I'd give this a try, even though I was skeptical about it working. I thought, "How can higher resistance equal better vapor and flavor on an unregulated mod?". This thread promised it was possible, and I was bored so I tried it.

I wrapped 11 wraps of 30g kanthal around a blunt syringe needle. Metered out at 1.5 ohms on my Reomizer 2.0. I threaded a doubled over bamboo crochet thread through it, wetted it and gave it a vape.

I wouldn't say it is louder than a regular coil, but there is more sound going on for sure. YES, it does give better vapor! Flavor seems about the same to me, but I've been vaping this flavor every day for so long I don't even know if I'm tasting it at all anymore.

So... better battery life and better vapor? I'm sold.

I don't get how it works, though. Is it because the coil is so tight and bunched up that it heats up a lot faster?

I am not sure either! :). I speculate that possibly because the entire coil gets wet with each squonk may play a part. On a typical coil, say, anything larger than 1/16", it takes lot more juice to wet it, so I theorize that it may be "drowning it" if you will, over cooling it. I notice that in the RM2, where I run a slightly thicker coil, if I over squonk, the vapor lets me know, cause there's less of it.

However, I also found that the RM2, at least for me, seems to prefer a slightly larger than micro coil (im using a 14 ga needle as a mold), perhaps because the coil, being slightly offset from the hole, prefers wicking action (rather than wetting the entire coil like you can in a setup with the hole directly beneath the coil). I summarize this theory by noticing that in order to wet the whole, longer micro coil, you introduce too much juice to it and if it doesn't drain right away, it gets drown a little?

No coil does well drowning in juice, so a slightly larger coil would do a better job of keeping its head above water (offset juice hole) and a micro shines when there is rapid drainage (center juice hole).

Glad you dig it synic :)

I've gotten many comments about the amount of vapor a micro-coil produces whether it's on my hornets on minis or a reomizer 2.0 on my VVGrand. Those small coils definitely produce lots of vapor and I think the flavor is wonderful. :) I've not changed anything with my wraps or style in ages. I just do the same thing every time and it works superbly.

I was doing lots of tiny wraps as tightly packed together as I could make them for a while but I found them to be prone to hot spots, recently I've been trying to make tiny gaps (as small as I can manage) between each wrap and it seems to work better.

I have to agree. A few gaps are a good thing. A good scrunch or two and its good to go. You diggin the RM2 ain't ya :)

On the Grand I've tried a bunch of different coils in the RM2, wrapping the wire on 18 and 16 gage needles and getting 1.2 to 1.7 ohms.
All of them work pretty good, 1.4-5 ohm seems to be the right spot for me.
Just made another coil with the .5 x .1mm Kanthal flat wire wrapped on a 18 gage needle, 5/6 wraps @ 1.5 ohm, I'm leaving it alone for now it's smooth as silk with awesome vapor.

Guys and gals,

I have been trying to do close, dense microcoils. but i just cant seem to get all packed up. It always ends up like a spring with small gaps in between.

Please help.

thanks

No problemo. 30 ga Kanthal A1 is my weapon of choice. Now please go here and check this thread out that explains how to get it done the way you want:

Once you master the basics, you can move to a smaller, micro mold :)

Thanks, drifter.
Am actually an Igo-L but i assume the same applies.

edit:
Was unable to do packed/densed coils but i used the rolled cotton as a wick for my usual coil (6 coils). And damn, the cotton wicks like crazy..

Am wondering, im using a 28 khantal..does it effect my denseness/closeness?

Thanks

Here's what i ended up with..8 or 9 coils..touching..with cotton thru it.. doesnt produce a lot of vape compared to before... am i doing something wrong? too many coils?

Awesome!

I have never used 28 ga, perhaps since its thicker than 30, it's less workable?

For me, the key to tight, touching coils is starting with a long strand of wire (4"), a good mold (it has to have a "stop" - a flat vertical surface to start and scrunch against) and illuminated magnification.

Some RBAs demand a counterclockwise wrap for proper coil / hole orientation, however on the RM2, I wrap clockwise around the mold, pulling tight as I go ensuring that the loops are touching as I go. If their not, I back it up and try again. If their not touching when you wrap it, they won't be touching when you remove the mold. Some small gaps are good though. You can do it. :)

Rock on bro :)

Re edit - that coil looks kick .... I think you got it :)

I think in this particular case there's too much wick. Try a slightly thinner wick, one that doesn't "muffin-top" out of the coil after it expands. That should improve wicking. And less wick in the cup. Maybe a half-inch tail to lay down in the bottom, and that's it. That should improve the air flow.

That coil looks very nice!

Totally agree ^^. Less is often more in terms of wick.

It's a wick that's too thin for the coil. Tastes Ok and I planned on making another tonight so I just went with it.

I was tired it was 2am my coil was all nasty looking, I can't stand using my carto tanks said screw it and went with it.

Not the wick - it looks great. I meant that silver thing :) :) :)
