The RB10 and W05 look the best looking overall IMO.

The Merc probably has one of the most extreme interpretations of the new nose rules so far.

I still need to get used to the new engine sounds.

Well I'm all set for the season opener.

Got 4 days off work, so plenty of time to see the Quali and the Race. Won't be watching it live though, starts at 5 am UK time. So the Sky box is all set to record. Really looking forward to the flag dropping on race day :D

I posted this in another FIA thread elsewhere. I think the balloon I tied to the fork of my bicycle had a better sound than these new engines. A little background on me, I love F1 and have for years going way back to before there was the coverage we are blessed with today. I went to every USGP race at Indy. It really broke my heart when Tony and Bernie couldn't work things out. I haven't been to COTA yet but I do want to go someday maybe even N.J. if that ever comes to pass. My number one buy if I ever hit the lotto, Season pass for F1 for myself and a person I know who would help me hide the bodies. LOL. I respect all drivers, like Lewis, Kimi (leave me alone I know what I'm doing) I once told Fernando "don't worry young man your time will come". Near the walkover area at Indy after his car died on the back straight a couple of years before his first championship. I'm going to love this thread.

Just watched the full quali session, those cars look a real handful even when it was dry at the beginning. As soon as the rain started well, they were more like rally cars

Really pleased for Lewis - although he does need a haircut . The Red Bull new boy had a good showing too, about time someone other than Vettel was on the front row. Disappointed for the Ferraris though, Kimi crashing out and Alonso making the wrong tyre choice for Q3. The newbies had quite a good showing too, overall.

The time spread did surprise me, quite a big difference throughout the field. Looks like this season will be an interesting one.

At first, I wasn't too impressed with the sound either. But as the session went on, I sort of got used to it. No more high pitched squeal of the V8's. To me they sound more like a cross between an Aston Martin and an old British Spitfire, much more guttural and deep - they just need to be a bit louder :D

I was at T.G.I.F. on a business meeting during qualifying. Qualifying started while we were eating so I asked the bartender if he could switch channels on the bar's TV so me and my partners (who were also F1 fans) could watch the qualifying sessions. He switched the channels and we got to watch a pretty riveting qualifying. Then some shmuck decided to switch the channel at the middle of Q3 to some college volleyball match. :S

So I missed the most exciting part.... :(

Barring any technical issues, I think tomorrow will be a Merc 1-2. Those Silver Arrows have been showing a lot of long-run pace. I'm impressed that the Red Bulls, given their limited testing, are showing that much pace. Based on long runs and Riccardo's qualifying time, they seem to be the #2 team right now behind the Mercs.

Unfortunately, there is a huge chance I'll miss tomorrow's race start. It's bugging me since it'll probably be one of the most exciting starts of the season since there is limited information about the cars' traction off the line. It's my niece's birthday tomorrow and her party will run right up to the race start. Then it's a 40-minute drive from the party venue to my house...

I hope tomorrow will have dry weather. I really want to see 2014's pecking order.

I'm sorry to say that if someone changed the channel at that crucial part of Q3, he'd be picking my fork out of his hand

I agree with the silver arrows 1-2, they seem miles ahead of everyone else, both with the aero and the powerplants.

Can you not record the race ?? That's what I'll be doing. It starts at 5am UK time, bit early for me when I'm not working. The coverage we get in the UK is amazing though - especially through Sky's dedicated F1 channel, over 4 hours viewing on race day. We get the Driver's parade, pre-race analysis, technical features, the race itself, podium celebrations, Driver interviews and post race analysis. A full day of F1, that's my idea of heaven :D

Nope, unfortunately my cable subscription does not include the recording service. I'm too thrifty to pay-up for something like that since the only scheduled programming I consistently chase-up is Formula 1. :D The rest, I download if I miss or watch re-runs.

Over here Formula 1 coverage starts 1 hour before the race with some pre-race analysis and ends an hour after the race with some recaps. We don't get uninterrupted coverage though. We have commercial breaks lasting 20-30 seconds every few minutes into the race. I envy you UK folks since you get the races commercial-free.

I'm not too interested with the pre-race analyses though. I'm pretty up-to-date with F1 news through my news feeds and I keep tabs with F1 developments through F1technical. The folks over there tend to dive deeper into the technical details of the cars than any TV coverage could. They also have some famous F1 analysts visiting often and chiming into the discussions. The pre-race technical analysis on our TV coverage seems to get their information from F1technical as well.

Shame about some of the reliability issues, I was gutted when Lewis went out so early. But what an amazing job Rosberg did, almost like a Vettel dominance.

Bit of a shock too after the race with Riciardo being disqualified like that. It was only covered briefly on the coverage that I saw, so looks like I'll be doing a bit of internet trawling later - find out exactly what happened.

Overall though, an exciting start to the new season :D

I didn't know Danny was disqualified. Cool - that bumps ALO & ice up in points. Yes, do keep us updated :)

Edit - just googled it and it was a fuel consumption issue. FIA says he consistently flowed more fuel than the permitted rate. Dead bull is claiming faulty sensor and appealing it. :)

That's what I found out too. It took a while for the news to come out though, a few hours after the race ended. Does mix things up a little :)

Took an internet blackout since I missed the race during the live telecast. I only finished watching the re-run now. Wow what a dominant performance by Rosberg. I hope this year he gets to fight for the title. Among the drivers, I think he deserves a proper chance at the title. He finally has the car to do it.

I did not know Riccardo got DQ'd. It's a shame since he drove so well the entire weekend.

Just seen a feature on why the Mercedes are so dominant so far. It's down to their turbo set-up. Instead of having the full turbo unit behind the engine, the Mercs have it split in two. Part in front of the engine and part behind the engine, with the connection running through the engine block. Doing it this way, they can use smaller intercoolers, have the gearbox closer to the engine, have a more compact engine/gearbox package and the turbo itself runs cooler so there's less turbo drag.

Running this system, is also more fuel efficient and means less stress on the tyres due to better balance in the car. So that explains why they've been so much faster so far this season. It also means that the rear bodywork of the car is more compact than the other teams, if you look at e30ernest's photos above you'll see the difference in the side pods :D
