I just made my first ever coil. And I must have done something wrong. This is the best flavor I've ever gotten from an atomizer. Honestly I'm sure it is probably the worst coil on an Ody, and I'm still happy with it. It might not last a full tank though...

I don't know, man. If you saw the abysmal mess of wire I just installed in mine you might be a little more proud of yours :p

I don't think it is the wire. In a hurry to get going once I got it I made my wire last night. Origional iAtty .236 Nickel NR wire with the 36 guage Kanthal you sent me and SS crimp beads.

When I got my Ody today I immediatly gave it a nice scalding hot water bath while in the water I gave it a quick scrub over with my cleaning toothbrush and took it out. The only thing I didn't take apart was the ceramic/pin assembly.

Then I took the ceramic/pin assembly apart as much as I could (couldn't get the ceramic out of the threaded tube even after taking the pin and nuts out.) and soaked the lot in vodka.

While that all was soaking I took out my torch and torched some of the included wick for about 2 minutes or untill the whole think turned a nice orangish/white glow and threw the wick in a seperate bowl of vodka to rinse.

While the wick was soaking I took out all the Ody parts and dried and lubed and assembled the ceramic/pin/threaded tube part.

Finally I pulled out my pre made wire and after about 8 minutes of soaking the wick I pulled it out and dried it and wrapped the coil.

Once I had it mostly together I dry burned it 3 times keeping the coil glowing 10 seconds each time and got no burn off smoke.

Once I did all that I primed the wick assembles and filled and started vaping.

So far I do get a light hint of the soapy taste. It isn't really bad but soapy taste and dry hit combined about gagged me..

I will play with it more in a couple days or once I can't tolerate the taste anymore but for now I have it going good just slightly odd flavor. Granted I didn't clean the wire but I didn't use the wire that came with it either and have never had quite this taste before with my iAtty. Based on that I would guess the soap taste is either because I didn't wash it well enough or it is from the wick dispite the torch burn and vodka soak.

Well ya shot me down... that answers that. Maybe some of the wick is just funky, I'm out of ideas at this point

Okay, time for my ignorance to show through! I confess due to my loss of vision and dexterity, I didn't pay attention to the iAtty as I should have. Even with my diminished faculties, I am finding success with the larger Odysseus and am very happy save for one item.

Withput any intention to offend, my vape tastes like what I suspect a clean ... would taste like. I need to do the burn and bath bit and that will should cure the taste as it is a fog machine. Everyone knows what a UFS fanboi I am but with Ody in da house, I can see UFS getting some trophy case time atop my 008!

The questions then:

1. As to "burning" the wick. Until I can get a pocket torch, will a lighter suffice? And if so, how do I know the burn is "done".

2. As to "bathing" the wick. I was a big, big drinker before I became disabled and I had to avoid the tempatation and remove all beverages out of the house. I will likely get a small quantity of Vodka at some point but is there any common household liquid or fluid that will suffice?

Thanks and I am LOVING the Ody. Imeo managed to outdo himself with this one for sure!

i was like this with my first, its just too easy to make it perform. and with little effort its a beast

its a late entry for the best of 2011 but a clear winner in my eyes

The nasty taste does go away quickly enough, it doesn't last forever, although it is very noticeable with the first trial hours. But just like that its gone.
Unfortunately I'm out of my Boba's Bounty and am using Gorilla Juice until the mail man pops some in my mail box, my taste buds could be out to lunch right now.

Yo brother Fright! I am a total noob to this type device but one thing that I did after reading what Para had done and that was to remove the ceramic from the threaded portion.

I noticed a much cleaner taste after doing that with mine. Mine was stuck as some have mentionedand was a pita to get out the first time. As Para noted, once removed and cleaned, it can be worked back and forthe in the threaded housing and make future cleanings a breeze.

My unsticking method was dangerous to the product and would not be covered under warranty so I suggest using Para's method of allowing penetrating oil to soak in. However you accomplish it, it is a needed part of the cleaning process as you will note if and when you remove yours.

Just be patient and dont use unreasonable force in its removal. I am sure the ceramics will be available at some point but it would be a bummer to take yourself out of the early Ody experience by trashing your ceramic. ;)

Better to leave it alone than use a lighter...not nearly enough heat to "burn" the wick. I got a torch from the local convenience store for 5 bucks. It's the shape of a pineapple and probably won't last a month, but for the money I don't care. lol

I'm with you on using booze and having it around. I used to like it way too much so I just don't get around it; I use 91% denatured alcohol and it does just fine; just do a really good rinse and dry everything.

Everything, with the off taste, points to a device cleaning issue. The wicking was cut from the same large roll so most everyone would be experiencing it. I can't imagine wire causing a problem because it gets fried as soon as you fire it up.

Really, really, REALLY clean every component is the best solution I can come up with.

Ody assembled and functional.. Like others got the soapy taste.

Other problem is flooding. The locking nut is all the way down, and the mouth tightened flush. If I fill that, it floods without ever opening the mouth piece. Does the locking ring need some vasaline?

-Z
only problems i could see with flooding is if you don't get the ground ring fully tightened. Also make sure you put the top caps on seperately, if you try to put them on pre assembled you'll pressurise liquid into the atty chamber/ceramic

Close the fluid off, Remove it from your mod, place it over a bottle or tissue, from the mouthpiece blow it out. Do this until you don't hear or see any excess fluid coming out of the Ody, replace it back on your mod, it should be good.

Ah thanks. The top cap procedure must have been the problem.

Just dissembled, placed in the tub, and ran hot water over everything for about 5 minutes, quick hydrogen peroxide bath, repeat hot water, wiped and relubbed, no more soapy taste, and vapes like a fright train.

This is going to free up a whole drawer in my organizer :D. Just need a few spare attys for the occasional drip.

Whoops, there goes the soapy wire theory:blush: While I was changing wires on mine though,
I did immerse all the Ody parts in a baking soda paste for awhile and scrub them with it
after a few alcohol cleanings only lessened the taste, but now it's gone.
I took out the ceramic from its housing as Para and Major have said (penetrating oil really helped).
Finally cleaning every nook and cranny probably helped more than the baking soda lol..
However, cleaning repeatedly/obsessively seems to have done it for me, at any rate..;)

There were a few more black marks that Repent had mentioned on the inside of the ceramic,
and the ceramic and surrounding threaded metal did smell like the soapy lotion-y flavor in question.

This was after 2 cycles in the ultrasonic w/ PGA even..
Taking out the ceramic really seems to help get it all, but definitely do so carefully..
It took me three rounds of cleaning, but I finally can't taste anything but the best vape I've had-
-still using the big stockpile of wick and wire I amassed for iatty1, so can't comment on the included supplies yet..
I love the little whoosh it gives when you let off after a drag, like a fresh LR306 amplified...great draw!

Thank you all very much for helping to contribute to discovering how we can all get a better vape from this masterpiece of a device. I will clean mine thoroughly again. As time goes on I'm sure we will all learn a few more tricks. I'm surprised Imeo has not checked in to pass along some of his infinite wisdom.

I think you nailed the solution.....

If you look at the entire mechanism it's one big set of threads; inside and outside so the total area is at least twice the actual dimensions...that's quite to get clean.

When I examined the black marks under magnification it was very tiny metal shavings. After cleaning, cleaning, cleaning....all are gone now.

The atty was in that wash, so it could have been, but I have my doubts. When I unboxed mine I took a draw off of it as is (no mod, or anything), just air, and there was an machine oil taste to it. Repeating with just the mouth piece yielded the same. Should have known better to fill it knowing that, but impulse got the better of me.

I didn't disassemble the ceramic from it's casing, as operating properly no fluid should ever get there. If it didn't mean rebuilding the coil i probably would have. But with the third try at it working, I didn't want to risk it.

My guess is there is some residual lubricant/coolant from the machining process in the threads that needs to get taken care of. Hot water with some force seemed to take care of it in my case.

In any case, I'd start with small amounts of liquid.. The stuff I drained out is getting tossed, as it likely has the soapy flavor in it at this point.

Hey Repent, sorry I just got home from a LONG day at work. I am good at whatever your want to do. But if not I will take it :)
OK I've had four people contact me about my extra Odysseus. This Odysseus is complete, unused, still sealed, and will go for what I paid for it to include PP fees, no mention of e-cigs.

The four people are:

Sax
Six2Arms
The Yeti
Digitaltitan

I am capping it at these four. Now, between you four, would you rather I sell it to the first person who contacted me, or have a "lottery" of sorts between you four? Basically I think of a number between 1-1000 and whomever is closer, wins. Just in case, I've picked a number already in case you answer back and also give your guessed number. ;)

I don't think anyone at this point can know who contacted me first, so this should be "fair" to all four family members.

What say you all?
