My wife and I are avid readers. We moved into this brand new house and our entire collection of books were still in their boxes in the basement. The basement then floods destroying roughly 2000 books. Needless to say we were very bummed. So we decided to go digital.

We have both been using the Sony PRS-505 and absolutely loving it. I actually find it more convenient than reading analog books. I've always been a huge Trekkie and I love the fact that its like the Pads they are always reading.

Now, why do you think I worked so hard to convince you to get a Kindle? I was going to come to you with MY questions. hahaha
It will be here Mon. or Tues. I had to laugh earlier. Hubby asked what he owed for it, I told him, thought he was going to have the big one. I guess the exact price didn't come up in conversation last night.

Oh no! Losing my book collection would make me absolutely ill, I'm sorry that happened to you guys. Glad you're recouping with digital though. Even so, there's nothing like a bunch of bookshelves lining the wall filled with books.

Leaford:) e-book reading since 1998?? where have I been all these years!?..
I was reading e-books back in 1998, too! But they didn't have dedicated devices back then, that I know of. I used my Palm Pilot PDA! I thought about getting a reader for my current Palm Smartphone, but the screen is so small on my Palm Centro - I wanted something easier to read! I did like the backlight option on my Palm device, though.

There are a lot of e-book readers on the market. Barnes & noble just released a device that looks slick, but they were out of stock the day after they came on the market! The Kindle is rated #1 by the review sites I found. I like that you can get newspapers and magazines, too.

I used to read a lot, but I just don't seem to make it to the bookstore these days and i'm running out of room for books! (I need to get them to the resale store...)

Well, obviously you've got much more self control that I do. :D Congrat! I hope you like it, I'm liking mine a lot.

Yeah, he's not too much of a techie, so I had to basically tell him how to order it and i was here when the box arrived from Amazon, lol! I guess it's silly to let him wrap it for christmas, but it was all he got me at first. I guess he got me some other things too, so maybe I could start using my Kindle now!

How good is the wireless coverage? I bought an aircard in Milwaukee for my laptop and it doesn't have coverage in my new town (small town in northern Wisconsin.) I'm worried that may be the case with the Kindle. Does it come with the PC softwarre or is that extra?

You don't need special software, you can just attach it like a usb drive and drop things you download in the document folder.

If you want to be organized and get things from other places and convert them, get that Calibre library application I mentioned before. Its free.

Here's a map for coverage, you can type in your zip and find out, hope this link works, click on the tab for North America:

Kindle with Global Wireless

You can get the PC software here for free, if this is what you are asking, I'm not that much of a techie at all:

Kindle for PC
Thanks, Pugzley! It doesn;t seem to have 3G coverage in my area yet. It says it has "EDGE/GPRS coverage (lower speed)" coverage.

Does anyone know what that means?
