I think wen has a decent reputation. (But I have dremel as well)
Amazon.com: WEN 2305 Rotary Tool Kit with Flex Shaft: Home Improvement

I read all of the Q and A's and quite a few of the customer reviews. Then, I looked at the 10 most recent 1-star negative reviews, which are sobering. Before making a decision to buy, I think you should read those negative reviews, because you might end up with a tool that's no better than the ones those reviewers got.

The price is ridiculously good, good enough to consider buying even knowing that it might be wasted money. I decided not to buy one.

I hear ya, biggie. BUT... Wen has bin around for a while and the flex drive comes with it. Which is $32 by itself. And it is on sale. Again, not saying buy it, just that it's not really junk. And... u kin get a lemon wit anything!

No, a Dremel flex shaft costs $30, but it's a Wen flex shaft that comes with the Wen kit. Many of the reviews, even the positive ones, talk about the questionable quality of the Wen flex shaft. Here's an aftermarket flex shaft that I would guess (yes, I'm only guessing) is superior to the Wen flex shaft, for $13: http://www.amazon.com/TEMO-Rotary-G...28519965&sr=1-3-fkmr1&keywords=Wen+flex+shaft

If you own one of these Wen units and are happy with it, I'll shut up, but my impression was that you own Dremel brand and not one of these Wen brand rotary tools.

Another important issue that is reported frequently regarding the Wen tool is that the bits are not held straight. They wobble. Fine for rough stuff, useless for finely detailed work.

Oh I do own dremel. More than one. :) But I always bought top quality. I used tools daily. Even nightly! LOL And I'll be one to tell you... Craftsman sux. Just sayin that if it's going to be used just "occasionally", the Wen would likely be over kill for ya. Not to mention, WEN is an old, old USA company. Check out the back porch for a history link. Not really the top shelf greatest quality but not really junk either.

Remember, Black and decker invented the electric drill. Then later on started to turn out junk. Their quality is coming back but people would rather porter cable, Stanley (which used to be junk) or Dewalt.

(psst... all B&D companies)

Thanks, Gary! I think I'm getting this one, along with the diamond bits on the same page. Will Dremel accessories fit it? If not, it's a no go.

According to the Q&A on the page... yup. (or is that... jup?)

The company headquarters is in the US. I assume until shown otherwise that the tools are made in China, not that I refuse to buy stuff made in China. I'm a vaper, after all! I just think it's misleading to say they're a US company if the manufacturing is done elsewhere. I call such companies US-owned in order to make the difference clear. JMHO.

I'm late to the party (it's been a busy week), but Harbor Freight is fine for consumables like drill bits, diamond burrs, sand paper, and so on, and they're also good for non-power tools, but the general opinion seems to be to stay away from anything containing a motor. On the other hand, they sell those Chicago Electric rotary tools for under $10, and the question is really, how long do you need it to last? What I usually do is to buy the cheap Harbor Freight tool, and if I wear it out, then that means I'm using it enough to justify getting an expensive good one somewhere else. But, a lot of tools, I've only used half a dozen times or so, and I'm glad to have saved the money.

I'd say a dremel is generally useful enough that it makes sense to pay a little more and get a real one, though.

So, I'm almost at my break even point! Should be some time next week!

By the way, the good news is I got the job and I'm officially full-time, probationary, permanent faculty. The bad news is that I'm teaching another completely new course, which I'm building as I go. So, not a lot of time to stop and smell the roses, but I'm having fun.

That is wonderful for you and them, sad for us. But Congratulations if you are happy, I am happy for you!
