LMAO!!! You guys are so silly:) (and I thought I was bad:D)

I am FREAKING OUT about the wood looking like mine and ruined. My wood is er... irreplaceable:blink:. Would it help if I waterlogged it first (to protect it for drilling)? What happens if the wood cracks? Can it be glued back together again??

stop thinking.

relax.

your wood is completely different from Scandal's wood. She was wrong in saying that FB's MAPLE BURL was just like her CURLY REDWOOD (←no "burl" in that specification) Different trees, different parts, different grain, different weaknesses.

different.

I didn't say it was just like mine.
I said it looked like mine (meaning color).

Mark's very responsive and said this one will work nicely, so I bought it. I think it will work well it's 1" x .5" x 1/16" bigger than the measurements Pdib gave me so hopefully he can find a sweet spot.

It looks like that whole block there is a sweet spot FB. That's an awesome piece of burl right there.

Now if I could get one as swirled as that, in blue, I'd be all over it for dibi #3.

IMHO its the high end mod to get. I've been looking at high end mods for months so I could treat myself when I hit 6 months off analogs. One look at pdib's work and I was sold. Don't have my first one yet and am already rehearsing arguments to convince the wife I need a second one.

Just tell her your buying a second one and go buy yourself some garage pillows like I am going to.

Very good. Completely right, Scan. But I wasn't concerned about what you said. I was just trying to put a little chill factor on GG there. she was startin' to freak, or so I thought.

I'm fine. I got worried for a minute there, but I realized that the green ones you made Treebeard were maple burl, and I think you've also made ones with Elder boxwood too :D:p

It was labeled as "buckeye" burl on the burl source website when I bought it. Raw buckeye would probably not be a good choice for a mod. Mine was dyed and stabilized which, I think, made it suitable for Peter to work with.

The fine grained wood is the concern. Burl is fine but my possibly second Dibi got nixed because it was a fine grained wood. No worries, it will all be good! I have a walnut one though so I can keep myself from having Dibi lust.

Do you have any pictures of your Walnut Dibi? I'm really hoping for a Walnut one as well.

So, more fun facts from Mark.

Buckeye and Box Elder should become very hard when stabilized.
With buckeye burl you need to watch out for pieces with bark pockets (very common with buckeye) because those will be weak points. With Box Elder watch out for pieces with voids. Box Elder is in the Acer family which is the parent family for all the varieties of maple. It is softer than the other maples but accepts stabilizing very well. Plus when dyed gets cool contrasts where it resists the dye.
