I don't have one yet but I like the idea of the magnets and even if you add screws I think the magnets should stay. Just duplicate and flop the holes on the other side for the magnet and screw. So the magnet is to the front on one side and to the back on the other.

anytime somebody says "just", there's gonna be trouble (it's a rule I have).

I'm not cramming all that in there. I'm already crazy tight with what I've got. :)

I don't know if there is actually enough space, but it looks like another screw hole could be done at the bottom between the bottle hole and the magnet on the opposite side from the screw hole that's all ready there.

May lead to possible breaking point though.

not. nope. can't. won't.

no "another" nothin' :p

things are quite literally so tight down there, that it drives me crazy just trying to fit what I've got.

instead of screws, could a 1/4 turn fastener be implemented?

obviously I dont have one yet, but the bottom plate thing has come to mind. I see both sides to the issue and would prefer no screws but some way of locking the bottom would be beneficial I think.

the magnets are 3/16" diameter. Nothing with a footprint bigger than 3/16 can replace them... The magnets are 3/16 because that's the biggest size I could reasonably fit.

I almost eliminated the one set screw because it was so impossible to fit it + magnet on the one side. (gdeal talked me out of it .. . . he smart)

Couple of things....

First off, the "battery rattle". With my mod, I notice that there is a slight rattle of the battery at the top of the mod. It is not that bad, or even noticeable really. I know that I could solve it with a small piece of tape on the battery, but will not bother, as it has no effect on the operation of the mod nor me. I had a "gripper" that the 510 connection would wiggle back and forth tremendously. I know of some people that filled it up with silicon cause it wiggled so much. The slight rattle is not a problem, nor will it ever be. I know that in some flashlights, they put a piece of stiff cardboard in the tube to prevent that very thing as well. So, my recommendation on that is to not worry about it.

Secondly, the subject of replacing the magnets on the bottom with screws. Once again, I prefer it the way that it is. I find it much more convenient to swap the battery from the bottom of the mod. If I had to take out screws to do that, I would lose some convenience. I actually think that the magnets are much more cooler anyway. I like the fact that I can totally disassemble the mod without the use of tools. I did notice that there is much more throw to the fire button, but that took maybe 2 minutes to get used to. Again, it was not enough of an inconvienence for me to go through the effort of adding the spacers for the switch.

My vote for both ideas for improvement are to leave things as they are. I am exceedingly happy with the operation of my mod, and see no reason to improve it.

Thank you, malkuth. And I've been thinking about this. It's wood. It moves. A battery that just fits snug indoors in the winter (forced air heat) isn't even going to fit in there on a warm, humid spring day. SO . .. . decision: there will be a little rattle. If the fat o-ring don't fit, flip the battery or remove a spacer at bottom contact. Use a little piece of tape in the winter. Take it out in the summer.

I'm not sure that either a camlock or a dzus fastener would be a good idea, since they would stick out and not allow the OliveR to sit on it's bottom as intended.

Something I just thought of, that might possibly warrant consideration, yet might be too complicated would be a tongue/groove solution (basically make the bottom cap slide into the bottom of the main housing from one side, still retaining the magnets to keep it from sliding back out, kind of like how a REO door slides into its body. The bottom cap could also still be the same height.)

However, this would cause Pdib many more headaches I'm sure, and to modify the original design might be more trouble that he feels it is worth it.

then I'll just have a chat with Mr. Thumb... no reason to button mash like I do anyway haha

for some reason on my reos I have a habit of needing to feel the battery being pushed down for ignition. been paying attention today and there's no reason for my behavior unless my mod needs to be cleaned. on my mini, I had a horrible habit of locking the button accidentally and I suppose feeling the battery being pushed down was the green light to vape so-to-speak. button locking issue not apparent on grand.

I agree..

btw AW IMR are notoriously variable in lengths … I mark the ones that fit best and designate to my b/f.

the magnets are awesome… i always marvel how strong they are and usually swap batts from the bottom.

fwiw i'm swapping batts often with 0.40 ohms RM2 which i find the most gratifying resistance for this little powerhouse

I don't know the details... but he was unlocatable, so I'm not sure if he forfeited his spot or just got bumped down til he shows up... all I know is, I'm in this one:)!!! YAYAYAYAYA!!!

I'm super happy for you GG. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Please tell me you ordered the full OliveR (with matching button and caps). Mine wasn't able to have them, yours should.

Actually, pdib said mine could be done full wood... and I asked for the richlite caps because I liked the contrast better:p.

I cut a 1" strip from a business card and inserted that with the battery, all rattle problems solved and it's still not too tight to slide out easily enough, the strip of business card stays in the bore with battery swaps and completely eliminates any rattle, no orings necessary now.

I'm really glad to hear others are happy with it the way it is, I was trying to stress that I don't see this as a big "negative" or as a big flaw in the design and said it may just be me, just that my preferences would be a rock solid connection, and for a button masher it can be a bit finicky as-is. also I see it more problematic for me with the one screw tightened than no screw with the floating cap. personally I will replace the opposing magnet with a screw, I can get the battery out from the top no problem, if it winded up being a little snug that smacking it against my palm will surely eject the battery. with the slice of card stock though it slides in and out readily enough for me to not be a problem.

I am getting more used to the whole pinky thing too, but will still do the screw thing :D

Nah... Back then they used to air-drop budweiser, playboy and marlboro's to my pops at his little jungle camp. Now, we cant even have a playboy.

It's ok... My liver needed a break anyways... No worries though! I have some tasty stout aging in my storage unit while i'm here... There very well may be a drunken monkey wearing a gorilla suit surfacing on youtube when i get home
