"cactus juice" is a brand name of a heat cure stabilizing resin, this is usually done at home with just a vacuum pump method. it is considered stabilized but it is nothing like something that is pressure stabilized professionally, anyone can soak a piece of wood in the "cactus" juice in a vacuum chamber, then "cook" it in a toaster oven and call it stabilized, that's a lot of what you find on ebay with smaller vendors who are stabilizing at home.

um . . . . . . snakewood is one of the hardest woods on the planet. Is there even a reason to stabilize it? I've suggested not going with snakewood in the past, as it's said to be ridiculously hard; but that was in an instance where the person thought to ask before buying it. I'm not worried, tho. Whatever happens happens. It's all good.

no worries brother, I won't send you snakewood, I've got other woods to send if needed :D I've been playing with some wood on my own too and I'm using the tools I normally use for stainless steel, so I think I'll be able to do something with it. something that's hard as far as wood goes is actually pretty soft compared to stainless steel I guess, only one way to find out, I'll let you know how it feels when I get it and start cutting it, maybe i can send you a scrap to test with your tools if you want

So far, I know that stabilized amboyna, ancient bog oak, curly maple, elder burls, and maple burls are good for both body and end caps

Too hard: Snakewood, Ironwood, Corrugata (TBD), and Mallee (TBD)

any others? I'll limit my blitzkreig to the workable ones :D

Val... you going into business selling Dibi mods:p? How many are you going to make??

the bog oak is not recommended for caps. Curly maple is not so questionable that I won't try it a few times. I feel pretty good about it; but don't know for sure. Elder burls are rather soft (at least all the ones I've played with). I don't think I've taken a box elder through with caps yet. I know I've had to bail on caps with a couple of them already.

Best bet for caps are the stabilized burl wood of Maple, Amboyna. Likely candidates are other dense burls and some stabilized exotics . . . but look, if all the little grain lines go up and down in a thing that's 1/4" tall and 1x2" across, it's gonna be prone to splitting. And machine screw threads don't take well to a vertical fiber that's incised every 1/32" of an inch (by the threads). I've got a couple of stabilized curly maples in this next batch. They are OKed for a Richlite default, or Richlite is preferred. I'll know more when I'm done with this run.

A lot of the stuff you're swinging at me is out of my range of experience, VH. I'm willing to try it, so we'll just see.
