Well here's another PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT: aka another lesson learned

It's been said by the man himself before, but for the sake of the newcomers, It's worth reiterating that we assume all the risk when we buy our own block.

Remeber this stabilized Gem Maple beauty? Turns out the "stabilization" produced a rock-hard block and on top of that it broke Pdib's jointer knives. So not only am I out for the block, I also owe Mr. Bee replacement tools.. it's all good though :toast:

take note that this is STABILIZED TYPE A which is harder than TYPE B

$_57.JPG

What? So how do you tell which is A and which is B? That is an incredible block too... what happened to it?? It can't be cut?

Um... while I'm asking... that looks a little bit like mine... mine's still OK right?:blink:

Found out ( the hard way, pun intended ) that stabilized TYPE A is a bit too hard for Pdib's tools.

I know, but how can you tell which it is? Mine wasn't that hard, I could scratch it with my fingernail, how do you know ahead of time whether a block is A or B?

You can find out from the seller which type it is if it's not indicated already. I got type A bec. I wanted matching caps with this.

Also worth noting to be wary of sellers who do their own stabilization. Despite the 100% positive review of Craigstevenstudios, it turns out his products may not be suitable for our DiBis.

The lone positive thing I have ran across is that "covered tobacco products" will be treated consistent with cigarettes and smokeless tobacco "In current part 1140, FDA imposes restrictions on cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, but not on the components, parts, and accessories of such products. FDA believes that applying the minimum age and identification restrictions to covered tobacco products only (and not to the components and parts that do not contain nicotine or tobacco) would be sufficient to protect the public health, because youth will not be able to use such components and parts and potentially suffer the consequences without also obtaining the covered tobacco product. In the event that FDA determines it is appropriate for the protection of the public health to extend the restrictions in part 1140 to components and parts that do not contain nicotine or tobacco in the future, the Agency will issue a new rulemaking and provide notice and opportunity to comment on such proceeding."

I was wrong (not surprising). Guess I was trying to read optimism into legalize. I can't edit the post now, but I was taking that language out of context. That section of the proposed regulations only pertains to display and sale (21CFR Part1140), and has nothing to do with whether they will regulate components and parts that do not contain nicotine. They leave hardware requirements vague at this point so no can be certain what they will do yet.

I will shut up now and wait for those that have been trained in legalize.

try PMing or calling Robert (redeyedancer). he may be able to do or recommend something.

is it a natural or poly finish?

Natural...and all he said he could do is poly coat it. I'm keeping it here and trying a few things first...

ETA: natural on the inside where it is coated with Tung oil...Poly outside.

Hi Megan,

I didn't think the finish on my 2 Woodvil was smooth enough... so I resanded to 2600 grit and are still refinishing both of them (for the 2nd time). I just bought er... Tung oil:p. They are on their 2nd coat, with 00 steel wood sanding between coats. There's several different natural finishes you can use, but in your case, I'd sand it down to 1000 and use only Vaseline (petroleum jelly). There's no way you can get allergic, it completely waterproofs it, and while you have to reapply fairly often, it's an incredible satin finish. I just read that monkey also vaselined his ebony woodvil, and was happy with his results too.

I have a pretty sensitive nose... and the Tung oil is smelly when not fully dry... but once dry, the wood smell comes right through... maybe yours isn't a pure Tung oil?? They make a whole bunch of different Tung oil 'finish', that contain other ingredients, mostly solvents. This is what I used: Hope Company Household Dust Dirt Stain Cleaning 100% Tung Oil Pint 16 Oz: Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food

Wood is incredibly easy and rewarding to sand (instant gratification), I do it at my computer while watching movies, so I barely notice doing it. You can't buy super high grits at the stores, but you can get them on Ebay. Strip the finish off, and see if that's the problem. It literally took 5 minutes to remove every bit of finish using a 220 piece of sandpaper (ordinary fine sand paper). If it's not, you'll still have a prettier mod:).

We're also learning as we go that: Craig Stevens is not particularly . . . . . .. errrrr . . . on the support/customer service end of things, and that the "typeA" lingo is not universal. I contacted him a few weeks ago, to try and establish some communication as to what we're doing, what he's doing, what of his stuff would be suitable, and etc. (Kind of like I did with Mark at burlsource) No reply. Meanwhile VH is picking out wood from him that proves unsuitable, is misrepresented for color (any . . . .other than blackness), and it's "all sales are final". :glare: Unless I hear back from him, and he makes it clear which of his product would be suitable, and how we would know, I'm not recommending the gamble.
