Mr. Mundy wins! Exactly right sir. It boils down to "worst case scenarios"... (Note: this only applys to metal mods)

With the pos end of the battery only touching the the (insulated) center pin of the mech, the "worst case scenario" is that the button gets stuck in the fire position or , in the case of broken shrink wrap, the switch gets bypassed all together... There will always be a load in place preventing a dead short... The coil, of course being the load and removing the atty, will always break the circuit.

With the battery in upside down, the scenario that Alex described can become a very real possibility. To make it even scarier... In that scenario, there is enough amperage being passed for (at least in theory) an arc between battery and the firing pin to weld the two together.

Ah, yes. That's what I get for posting pre-coffee >:[

I should know all this after my training, but part of that training included a pot of coffee or so.

And I worked with large control cabinets as well (3 phase 440V) back when I was in the film/video industry. A couple of years ago, I got hit with more than 4160V (6000 VDC). It's not the volts that scare me.

Laptop with a magnetic hard drive?
Morning all! Good safety tip with the Dibi...Don't get it too close to your computer, he uses neodymium magnets that are very small but very powerful. Don't ask me how I know  Luckily nothing was wiped but was scary for a moment.

No, I set it right next to my USB ports and everything went black. A hard restart and it was fine...just a thought. My hubby wanted to order a huge neodymium magnet to put against our shared wall with our evil neighbors to screw up their speakers.

But we just moved...

Forget the neodymium magnet. The big ones are expensive, dangerous and you can't turn 'em off. May I suggest, as an alternative, a good, high power, electromagnet? Something like this perhaps... :D

Edit... Come to think of it. Seanap works with high power systems. If you talk nice to him, I bet he could provide the correct specs on what size transformer you'd need to wreak the kind of havoc you're looking to do.

Look at me... Building relationships... :p

Mr. D: me thinks I need to change my pos pin from brass to SS. the sandbox is very dirty, and I think the SS will be better suited to the environment.

We can fix this problem, send me your paypal address and I will send you some money and my mailing address! :D
Seriously tho this thing rocks. I was dead set on burl from the first pm I sent pdib even if it meant providing my own wood. He assured me he had some damn nice burl and man he wasn't kidding. Its authentic right down the the small knot hole! Loving this so far.

On the battery orientation; I will admit that I was seeing a distant and hazy horizon in my knowledge (meaning: that I don't know enough about everything to be the authority). I had read about multiple reasons and scenarios why Pos→fuse→insulated center of atty can be better. I decided to err on the side of caution (despite the fact that the battery casing, or lack thereof, only touches wood) and specify. I had also read some reasoning which advised against having the positive current running through the exposed mod body and exposed atty body/cap. I think that in true electrical terms, that doesn't matter; but, I wasn't sure enough to dismiss all ramifications. Anyway, if it works both ways, why not recommend one of them? :D

Love it!! Yes we knew all of this but it would be so funny!! Magnets smaller than the ones in the Dibi were used by me as earrings for a bit. Dayam that hurt!!! They made contact through my earlobe just fine. Getting them off without spilling blood was the trick.

We moved so no worries.

i have one and HRH has one too. I took a pic of all my wood mods just now - but i need her to return from frivolously wasting my money to upload it!

Also - i just bought some more wire from Temco - i have no idea if they are having a sale, but i just picked up 100ft of 26g and 100ft of 30g kanthal, all shipped for $14.

The only way the twins are going to be reunited is is we happen to be sitting in the same bar.
Even then, it'll just be a visitation. I'm not quite ready to give up custody just yet. ;)

Everything you said about the burl is dead on. I was blown away when I 1st saw it in real life. The marbling is so good it almost looks fake. I was REALLY glad I didn't go with the stabilized wood. I'm still loving the feel of the more natural wood.

Room has been made in the inbox. Also note that I said the battery thing only applies to metal mods (or mods with a metal interior). In the Dibi, it makes no difference at all. I actually run my batteries with the pos toward the button. It's just a better fit. ;)
