Conclusion: I think it could be used in pinch if it were wound without contact between adjacent coils and it was kept wet at all times while powered. But any attempt to dry burn will form prodigious amounts of titanium dioxide, which does not stay stuck to the coil like the oxide layer on Kanthal seems to. Moreover, it's a real PITA to get it to glow at all evenly. So for the time being, I'll stick with Kanthal, Nichrome, or if I'm feeling masochistic, R41.

They are about to start selling ready wires (titanium R/nickel NR). I wonder how they got around the shifting resistance. Perhaps the titanium wire readily available is not made in such a way to have even distribution/density, and thus causes the ohms to jump around? Could they have sourced a different type of titanium? Could it be a different grade other than Grade 1, in which the alloy mix of titanium and other metals makes for a more stable, even molecular distribution?

Disclaimer: the guy who has come up with this is imeo, of GG fame. He believes that dry burning and torching Kanthal is unhealthy (not trying to start a discussion on that here, just providing some background). Until recently, all his attys were really geared towards "traditional" coils wrapped around silica - not that you couldn't put microcoils in his attys, it just wasn't his thing. So dry burning and using glowing coils and tweezers to tame microcoils were probably not in mind with titanium wires.

It will be interesting to see the titanium pre-made wires they will be selling soon, and how they perform. FWIW, glad to see him pushing the envelope again and taking some risks, regardless of the verdict on titanium.

Addendum: the ready wires are now available for sale, but I won't link out of respect, as this is Peter's thread. Easy to find, for those interested.

but as the sun set, an imitating interloper showed up:

The interloper has a dirty, hidden secret.

Shhhhhhh! Don't ask, don't tell!

What was your source for the titanium, what level of purity was it, and was it pre-annealed?
I got it from a jewelry supply house called Rio Grande; it's their part number 699-500. It feels like it was annealed. This was the only source I found that had 30 gauge that claimed it was "soft". Some others had "half hard".

What Titanium grade was that, for the record?
It claims to "Grade 1".

also is this like a coating that burns off and that's it? have you tried washing it off and seeing if it stays clean after that?
The wire comes on the spool looking like titanium (gray). The white coating forms when get the wire hot enough to glow red, as you would dry-burning it. It flakes off when you manipulate the wire and re-forms if you re-heat the wire.

They are about to start selling ready wires (titanium R/nickel NR). I wonder how they got around the shifting resistance.
I'm pretty sure some of the shifting resistance I saw last night was shorting between coils, but it looks like it also has a whopping temperature coefficient. I just tried an open loop of wire roughly 3" long. Cold, it reads 1.2-1.3Ω. As it heats up, the readings rise to roughly double that. They return to the original value when the wire is allowed to cool again.

As before, I'm firing that at 10 watts. With a loop in open air, gets it only hot enough to glow dull red. I have no way to measure the wire temperature other than describing the color that it glows. It seems dull red is not hot enough to form the white oxide; instead the wire seems to have turned a bit blue. This is it after having been fired at 10 watts quite a bit:

s7kJUPV.jpg

A couple of other observations in this configuration: Blowing on the wire while firing it cools it enough to drop the resistance noticeably. Firing the same loop on a mech at a constant voltage (roughly 4.02V -- measured in-line) produces almost no visible glow. Back on the DNA with the power dialed up to 15W brings the resistance up to around 2.8Ω and produces a bright orange glow -- as well as white oxide formation. Turning it up to 20W pushes the resistance beyond the DNA's 3.0Ω limit at which point it stops firing and reads "Check Atomizer".

More conclusions:

There's some critical temperature below which white oxide formation doesn't occur. Titanium wire has a substantial positive temperature coefficient which tends to limit power a device that operates as a voltage source (such as a mech). Titanium is probably more suitable for a mech than for a device that produces constant power. It might usable on mech if wound into a non-contact coil configuration, such as one would traditionally do with silica as a wick. I'm tempted to try this, but don't have any silica handy at the moment. I'm confident it's not going to form white oxide while wet with juice. Whether it's practical to use or not depends whether it can be dry burned once its gunked up. Throwing away a coil every time it gets gunked up would be plain silly.

I'll probably play with it some more..

For me hunting was always about the dogs and training them to fine tune what they were bred to do, my weapon of choice was a camera. We rarely killed anything although occasionally the guys would and I understood that it was necessary. The majority of the time we would praise the dogs, take pictures and leash them up and go home happy. It was a lot of fun and I enjoyed it a lot.

At the time I was the first female UKC licensed bench show judge in the state and at one show a couple of the guys were complaining about my judging, while we were talking about it one said "how can you judge the dogs fairly if you have never been out in the woods hunting and watching the dogs as they do their job"? My response was "well then let's go" I went out the first time to gain credibility with the houndsmen but I fell in love with the sport. It didn't change my judging much at all but I did gain the respect of the hunters and instead of questioning my choices on the bench they began to listen to what I had to say.
I also got in pretty good shape walking some nights 5 to 10 miles in the woods, that was probably the best time of my life.

I'm also a grow it yourself-er, and the type who will be out fixing something "broke"... even if I end up breaking it more. :p Fishing and camping yes... hunting no ads I will never enjoy the part where you have to kill things. Too much of an animal lover. Even the fish - can't stand the way they look at me when I've got them on the hook.

Seems to be a personality type though - tinkering with coils and getting your hands into everything, especially if there are tools and dirt involved.

I am also a firm believer in only kill what you eat, or use, I'm not eating raccoon but the hides of the few we killed were put to good use.

Fishing now that's a different story, what we catch I filet and put in the freezer and eat, grilled large mouth Bass is very very tasty.

Vwls -- I hunt only what I want put up in the freezer to eat on. I never have been a trophy hunter and don't kill does or bucks with velvet spikes. I tend to only go after large old grey face bucks. Now and then a long shot will bring a young buck down, that happens. As far as other critters, I only hunt deer and go on the occasional rabbit hunt because those rabbit are some of the tastiest critters around!
Fishing is another story. If they are legal they go into the live well..lol ;)

Rossum -- Titanium is where the color titanium oxide or titania, it is a naturally occurring oxide of titanium chemical formula TiO 2. When used as a pigment, it is called titanium white or Pigment White 6 as I have know and used it. I doubt I would want coils putting off Pigment White 6 lol :D

Pesky little rascals those coons..lol
They are beautiful but I have no use for them. Doubt I would eat .... either. Unless of course there was nothing else to eat. :D

Yep, in California where I lived then we hunted primarily in orange groves with the permission and blessing of the grove owners. It served a dual purpose, the main purpose was to keep them leery of people and dogs, otherwise they would go into the neighboring housing developments and be a danger to children and pets. They are very very bold animals and become serious pests if they lose their natural fear of people, many stories of them opening doors and going into homes and wreaking havoc. Beautiful yes, but sweet NO.
