I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, every coil I make tastes burnt. The first one was too close to the insulator of one of the posts and it was starting to melt a little, so I get that. But this one is really good I think, and still does not taste good. What do you do with the newly built wick/wire, just vape? Burn it? I thought for sure this one would be good, idk whats goin on!

What kind of wire are you using? Also some silica wick can burn easier than others. It's hard to say what's going wrong. I never get any burnt tastes unless I cank my voltage too high or after alot of heavy vaping and the coil gets alot of buildup on it. I would try vaping it at a low voltage to break it in then you can crank it up a bit. One other thing is that you must wrap your wire around the wick very loosely...like almost floating overtop the wick but not quite. If you are wrapping your wire tightly around the wick that is your problem.

Try washing your wick off with water and blow out as much water as you can then do a dry burn and start over...pry your wire up a bit to loosen it around the wick also.

One other thing that just came to mind is if you have excess wire coming off the wick to the posts then that is going to give you a nasty taste. You want to run the wick from post to post with no wire at all hanging off the wick leading to the posts.

For people having problems with their wick/coil tasting anything other than pure clean juice you may want to look on facebook and join the wick and wire group they have lots of helpful info and you can ask for advice.

I can't give a link as it will prob violate forum rules. You can search for it and find it easily. It's called Of Wick and Wire.

I did have some extra wire between the post and wick, i wanted to make sure the coil wouldnt touch the post, that was the reason for the extra. I am making another now, I'll try to get it as close as possible to the wick. The coil isn't wrapped tight, but it is very close to the wick, it needs to be doesn't it?
But what I really want to know is if you need to dry burn the wick/wire before you use it. Is it necessary?

Try your best to get rid as much excess wire as you can...don't worry about the coil touching the post as long as it's not touching anything else it should be fine...always do a pre dry burn before you fill it up to make sure there's no shorts in the coil and you'll be fine. As AzPlumber said when your coil is wet it should not glow anywhere at all during normal vape time...if it is then that's why it's tasting burnt. Remember to start with a low voltage or make a higher ohm coil. Dual coils are really nice in the Phoenix as well...that's what I'm currently using.

Another thing I do to a single coil is put my screwdriver under the coil after it's built and screwed into place and pry up on it to raise the wick/coil as high as it can go to keep it away from the plastic post housings and to allow more juice to be dripped.

BTW, good reviews you do I watch some of them.

Yea I made this one with two strands of wick, each one about an inch just laid next to eachother. I unwrapped a paperclip and put that with the wick to keep it stiff while I wrapped the coil, then pulled the paperclip out. The wire/wick is all the way as close as it can go to the posts. It glows evenly when dry burn testing. I also pryed it up a little to it doesn't touch the post insulators. I do have one tiny spot that glows when its juiced up, I am going to try and pull the coil a bit tighter on that side. I'm assuming that if the coil isnt close enough to the wick, the juice isn't cooling it enough, so it glows.

Ok this is annoying now. If you wrap the coil loose, the wire glows when you vape, and tastes burnt. If you wrap it tight, it won't wick fast enough, but the coil still glows. I've made 8 wire/wicks so far, and they all will glow on some portion of the wire when I juice it up. Maybe someone can explain to me what I'm missing here. I am a very hands-on person, I make and build things all the time, so this is killin me that I can't get it to work.

Too tightly wound possibly? That will stop liquid from wicking properly.

Sounds like you're pushing too much voltage or you're not using enough wraps making it too low of a resistance for your setup. Stuff one side of the wick down into the juice well and let the other side go up into the shell casing...drip about 15 drops wait a min drip 5 more and vape.

I did turn the voltage down to 3.2v, and when I fire it with the top off, I do not see any part of the coil glowing. It vapes, but doesn't taste very good. The wick doesn't look burned at all, but maybe it is. Why put one end of the wick up, to have gravity help? I think I'm done playing with this for today, I'll be back at it after work tomorrow though..

I might have had it at too high of a voltage, thought it was at 3.7 but it was about 4v. I have been taking the piece of wick and laying it along a needle. This gives me something stiff to wrap the coil around, then pull the pin out. I am not wrapping really tight, but it is a pretty secure wrap. Do you mean loose as in space between the inside of the coil and the start of the wick? Or like still touching the wick all the way but just barely?
Thanks, and sorry for all the questions! I appreciate everyone helping out, I really want to get this working, and then setup a dual-coil hahaha

Are you checking the ohms when you finally assemble? Curious as to what you have there once complete.

Yeah, that's what it sounded like too low ohms/too high voltage. You want it like you said, still touching the wick but just barley...enough to slide a needle under all the way around. Might want to try a thicker needle or eyeglass screwdriver.

Well my HH.357 stopped firing, so now I NEED an atty, so I have to get a good coil going lol. It seemed like the one I wrapped loose would glow when the wick was wet, if I wrap it kind of tight like the one I currently have in there, the coil doesn't look to be glowing but still has a bad taste. Maybe I had the wick already burned and thats what I'm tasting.

Make a new one and wrap the coil around it about 6-8 times. Unbraid your wick so you will have multiple strands and put some going upwards and some down into the juice well. Make sure you keep it wet from the start with 15-20 drops and make sure it's up high as you cvan get it away from the plastic on the posts.
