Pipe tobacco and Cigar extraction

I splurged and bought a heater for extraction. I was shilly-shallying getting one because knowing myself, I'll re-do all my cold extractions. It's getting out of hand but I'm going on the presumption that nicotine e-juice is going to get banned or taxed out of existance. Massachusetts politicions tax anything that moves and even at that, they are running out of money to keep all those double dipping pensions funded.

The more experience we gain making our own juices will come in handy. We don't have to worry about PG & VG. Synthetic concentrates don't have nicotine so they should be allright. SS RBA'a & RDA's last forever and I've got enough Kanthal to last 20 yrs. But I don't think we need worry about Kanthal. The FDA may rule on overseeing e-cigs due to silica wick being unhealthy. Stock up on Ekowool, your coils will last longer. batteries won't be a problem. I think it might all come down to nicotine. So freeze a couple of 500ml 10mg -100% bottles. At 12 mg it'll last a long time or at least to ween oneself down to 3mg. and then off it alltogether.

Okay, so if 5 grams of pipe tobacco can get 40ml of liquid, would 1 gram be enough to get 8 - 10ml or would that be playing in the realm of diminishing returns?

People mention cycling the heat in the microwave. Some people mentioned three cycles of heat. How long should I wait between cycles?

I'm thinking of starting with a simple pipe extract and seeing how it goes. I just have to see if the price jives with this pay check. It is mortgage time.

A lot of this is experimental and learning from those who have gone before us. I have the luxury of reading quite a bit, timewise I mean. I have wasted a lot of juice makings while failing a lot of experiments. One thing I've noticed is that dark tobacco's seem to give a higher amount of extract than lighter varieties. Doing a cigar I only use half if it's near 10 grams. I will use 40 mls of base liquid, usually PG, with 5 grams of tobacco. Using heat, I do one round a day for 3-4 days. Stirring each time. I keep both hot/cold containers covered. Cold I go at least a month.

I use 11 micron filter paper followed by 6 micron. Pleat the round filters and drop into a funnel. First pass is through a coffee filter. Easier and more effective for me than syringing through cotton.

Has anybody tried aging with wood chips? I was thinking it might be similar to barrel aging only without the hassle of making a full liter for a barrel.

Syringe/cotton ball filtered my first 2 heat extractions today.

To recap, I had a Sinclair Cabinet '99 and an ACID Blondie. I combined 20 ml each of PG and VG with about 3 grams of each cigar. I setup each for hot and cold extraction.

Heat extraction was 3 X 10 hour cooks at 150 F.

The Blondie yielded about 35 ml of a Guinness Stout colored extract. The Sinclair '99 yielded about 30 ml and is lighter, more like a good porter beer. Lower yield was due to the cigar being dry, so it absorbed more of the PG/VG mix.

I need to sample these now. I tried some of the '99 extract yesterday. Not sure what I'm supposed to be tasting, but it sure is sweet, with a slight earthy, smokey tone to it.

I'll report back after I've mixed a more proper batch of each.

It works for beer, so I don't see why it wouldn't in this application. In fact I'm suspicious a few vendors are doing this already...

Looking for suggestions on funnels for 4oz amber bottles. I was thinking of going with a smaller funnel that I could put a 11 micron and 2.5 micron filter in. I just can't make up my mind on which to try out.

4oz and 16oz Plastic with strainer. I like this one, but I'm not sure how well it would fit the bottles.

The human brain is amazing. I extracted my first quality cigar, an Acid Kuba-kuba. Lots of spice, flavor and nuance. The NET picked up most if not all of the nuances. The thing that blew my mind is when I vape it, my tongue tastes the spice all over my lips, like they are covered in the flavor. God bless this thread and my puny brain

Thank you xMackX for starting this thread. I did the (3) 5 second sessions in the microwave, and filtered through a cotton ball stuffed into a syringe. This doesn't take long at all, and it worked just fine. It was an extraction of a Marlboro Red with 10ml 80/20 pg/vg.

An alternative method of staining you may find useful, especially if you want to do larger batches or teas, is using a jelly straining bag. You can buy these anywhere they sell canning supplies. Those things are tight woven and won't let any partials thru, you can squeeze all the goodness out, toss the scraps in the trash, wash the bags and reuse.

Hi guys, enjoying reading through this thread and attempting my first DIY. I just ordered some 50/50 6mg unflavored base and have about 50 cigars that have been sitting in my humidor untouched for a few years. Going to try the quick microwave method and see what happens.

Also have some tins of pipe tobacco (Nightcap, EMT, and some good Latakia, etc.)

Has anyone used "older" cigars that have been a bit dried out from time to time? Does it affect the extract much or at all?

Since you are primarily extracting oils from the cigar, it won't be the same as a properly humidified cigar, but you might be ok....it really depends on the original tobacco. Don't expect the same flavor profiles though. I've smoked a few original Cubans from back in the fifties that were sublime, but they were kept in proper storage, and didn't lose a lot of their characteristic flavor, though they were much more subtle.

Since the technique is so quick and simple, just give it a try, you have nothing to lose..... you can never re-humidify a cigar once its dried out (well, you can, but it won't be the same).
