1.05 ohm (4 strands drill wound 32ga kanthal a1) on a 500 mesh solid SS oxidized wick cut on a 45° to the grain, in a glass tank i-atty, the fill and ground screws were replaced with low profile + head screws.

Just a question for you guys. How long do you go on your coils before you change them out?

I change mine when I change flavors, or when the wick starts getting slow. I use twisted 32ga 3 or 4 strands depending on my fancy at the time, and I figure some fluid gets gunky in the twists that'll never really burn out. So if flavor isn't what it used to be, I'll change the coil and wick.

I was going through my old coils to find rusty looking ones for my rusty coil thread (I'd love to hear your guy's opinions, if you want to check in!) and figured a coil boneyard shot was in order:

Is it total OCD/hoarding behavior to save some of your old builds? I can't be alone! ;)

Only if you tag them with masking tape on which is written little notes about that particular coil…not that I would do anything like this, its just an excuse, oh I mean observation, yeah that's it.

This is the 4 strand 32ga wire pre wrap.

Okay I've been doing double barrel coils on my kayfun and I would like if someone could give me the correct wraps and drill bit size using 28g kanthal to achieve 1.5 ohms? All mine come right under .9 ohms

You really want 3 ohm coils made of 28 gauge? That's going to be a ton of wire volume and will take forever to heat up. 0.9 ohm dual is even higher than I would go with 28. Try 32 gauge kanthal for a 1.5 ohm dual coil, which you should be able to use 10 wrap 1/16" microcoils for.

Helios Clone, quad vertical coils, 6 wraps around 3/32 drill bits. Normally I like .3-.4 ohm so this was a bit too low. Flavor wasn't that great, makes juice vanish instantly, and so much heat that my drip tip was hot to the touch.

Oh yum delrin drip tip ...

You should call that wire "ordered chaos wire" or simply barbed wire! ;)

How you twist that? Almost looks like some type of braiding or something, very unique! I bet the flavor is great. Any pics of a finished coil?

It's actually really easy to make, its one long strand of 32ga folded in half and clockwise wound tightly in a drill, this makes a double strand wire; then fold the double strand wire and wind it counterclockwise in the drill just as you would any other.

The barbed wire look comes late in the winding process so go slow.

I made it simply to explore sub ohm coils without the need for lower gauge kanthal on hand.

Oh! So it's twisted twisted wire then, that explains it.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll have to try this as well! I noticed you spaced your coils a bit, personal preference or were you running into issues with dry wicks? I've noticed with twisted wire it seems to need super saturated wicks to avoid off-flavors, and spacing the coils helped a lot in that department for me. I'm curious if you were running into the same issue?

I'm not having wicking issues now, I did at first but I really had no idea what I was doing or how the atty I have was designed to work.

The coil spacing is more a function of getting the ohms I want in the space I have. I haven't micro or nano coiled the 'barbed wire', I've just used it on your standard wicking materials in more or less standard form.

And 'nother cheap(ish) but LEGIT, mod has been added to my collection.

Behold! The RichMan Hybrid! It's a true piece of work. Nothing terribly fancy, but VERY solid.

This is my usual genny build; ss mesh with ye olde ekowool sock. 3/4 wraps of 28 gauge kanthal. Comes out to around .7 Ohm.
I am DIGGIN' IT.

Somehow, I frequently wind up with my bottom coil obscured by the ekowool. It doesn't seem to affect performance, so I don't sweat it.

And now, some vapor action!
