November 30, 2016We're listening.
Half my house has a basement other half has a crawl space.Exciting day at the E Homefront...main waterline let go under the house, before the whole house cut off valve...went out to the street and shut off what I thought was my meter, water hept flowing.....many frantic calls to emergency plumbing services only to discover such a thing is merely a joke in my area...frantic call to the water company and they said a tech would call with a blocked number....I finally found my meter, and it was buried in mud up to the cover plate, nobody has looked at this meter in a looooong time. I started digging, with my hands and with a cup, got to where I could finally see the meter and the cut off valve...Bubba must have got the ticket to install this thing because the cut off valve was snug up against the wall of the plastic box set it the ground to protect the flooded valve and meter. So, I started digging, and scooping mud to gain access to this cluster Fffff, and then the tech guy shows up. Between the two of us we managed to dig out and pry loose the plastic box, whereupon the line ruptured, rapidly filling the hole with murky clay water. All the meanwhile my crawl space is being flooded from the broken feed line...but he managed to secure the shut off valve and stop the flow of water. So...no running water in E's house, but the good side is no more flooding under the house...tomorow I go shopping for a wet vac, and wait for the call from the emergency plumbers, no time frame given, just a , we'll call ya when they are 30-45 minutes outgood thing the liquor store is only two miles away

If I ever got a "totally tubular", I knew I was "in" for at least ten minutes.
Half my house has a basement other half has a crawl space.
The crawl space is under a bathroom, the dining room, and the Kitchen
So the 3rd time my water lines froze in my crawl space, it broke in two places
I replaced them all with PEX lines with SharkBite fittings. I can't say enough good things about them.
PEX, like everything else,
They make really good thick lines and cheap thin lines, (usually used in trailers).
The good PEX can freeze solid and not break.
SharkBite I use these even when I use copper pipes.
Sharkbites can be put on and taking off without shutting off the water!
In fact, that winter when my pipe froze & broke in two places, we just cut the pipe and put a Sharkbite on and connected it back together, all without shutting the water off.
That next summer I replaced all the copper in my crawl space with PEX.
Also GREAT for hot water tanks.
Put Shut off valve then Sharkbite on the line in and line out, and it makes replacing it so much easier.
My hot water tank is electric and the wiring takes longer then the plumbing.
Takes maybe 15 mins to replace my tank.

Last night was fun, plumber finally showed up and patched the pipe, but I had to sign a disclaimer that they couldn't warrantee the work because of the type of piping we have. Then a crew showed up to fix the meter, the water company had sent their emergency subcontractors which specialize in grading and utilities...a couple hours later they had the main fixed, turned on the water...and the under house repair was leaking![]()
I asked one of the crew if he could fix it, for cash...he fixed it in two minutes and agreed to take fifty bucks, I gave him seventy with a smile...

I think we might have the protection plan from the water company, my wife couldn't find the paperwork for it.Glad it is fixed.
This is exactly why I have the home warranty.
Ever since I had a bad water heater experience about twenty five years back, I have been very Leary of anything to do with water pipes. The heater was in a closet in a condo, and when I opened the valve to the hose going outside, the valve stem came all the way out! I managed to force it back in after a couple tries, and by then our downstairs neighbor was pounding on our door...yup, insurance company was much needed to cover the damages to both unitsPlumbing is one of my least favorite tasks.
Glad things are looking up!
Hope there weren't any bikes downstairs!
