You Da Man Chief!!! Thank you so much for them vids and this info...you got me to thinking I can do this, considering maybe replacing the old lines with Pex. I could do it piecemeal and put shut offs where I might not be able to get at the walls feeding the baths, so if those old lines fail I could isolate the problem. I'd put shut offs all over the place would be nice to just loose water in one area and still have it in the rest of the house till that problem gets solved. Much appreciated post

At the very least, I'm going to look into having a few shark bite fittings on hand and some lengths of Pex in the various diameters in case of another emergency.

I forgot to mention the PEX Manifold system
It makes it so each room or each device can have it's own water line and shut off.
I went with copper and I think I went with a 8 or maybe 10 branches, 5 cold and 5 hot. Makes it so you can shut off just one room or thing, instead of the whole house.
Really nice for lines that go outside like a garden hose.

Mine are no where this big but this gives you an idea what I'm talking about.

I really like the idea of them manifolds, could just label them all up one hot and one cold and run the lines to their destinations leaving a little extra for wiggle room. Then could tie one in at a time and do the resto in sections with no real down time...the plumber gave me a ballpark of about 5K to replumb the house with Pex, thinking the materials might be only a fraction of the cost? If that manifold is positioned near the access point to the crawl space, it would make it really easy to quickly isolate a problem circuit in the system...at the very least, you have helped me to design a feed system for the house if we choose to hire a contractor...you got them wheels in my head spinnin' .

HaHa, got some nagging recently about the maintenance expenditures on the old ones, seems when you have a fleet, when one has a problem, another is sure to follow suit to get its proper attention...wonder why that is?

This is what I have heard from some of our old timer plumbers, once you have the tools to install the Pex, the stuff is so easy to install, anyone could do it. The only thing to remember is to keep it out of direct sunlight or UV light, because it will break down the plastic. We don't install much of it, but we have done some. My

Buy a foot or two of the PEX and a Sharkbite, & couple of fittings and play with them over the winter. Get the feel for putting them on & off.
Then hire a kid by the hour to run the lines in the spring
Worst-case scenario you then hire a plumber to hook them up.
I did that with my electric. When I replaced the old fuse box and wires with all new.
I ran all the wiring in my house including new circuit breaker box, plugs, switches and light fixtures, then I hired a electrician to hook up the main to the new circuit breaker box.

5k The hardware, (valves, fittings, & manifolds) are going to be your main cost, the manifold being the most $$
I would do as much work myself (or hire a kid) before I called a professional

I knew nothing of this until I got back and found not only that I'd had a problem, but that the neighbours had organised the plumber, the drying out and all I had to do was sign the insurance claim.

Now your just being mean yeah, I get it, from what I have seen from the ""professionals"", it's a pretty sketchy profession, or at least, seems to be from personal exposure to it...I am going to go crawling around under the house and measuring, and do a cost analasys on a parts only basis...this Pex pipe looks to be a zip doo done kinda deal, seems like I can do a work as I can piecemeal retrofit and have my cake and eat it too kind of deal. You have inspired me to git off my .... and think about a new chalange Chief...for that I thank you

Put the first 9 miles on my new Masi today, hit the hilly part of the trail to see how she rides. Them wide tires handle the bumps really nice, and the energy transfer to the bike is way More efficient than any bike I have ever ridden before. I am loving it!

Whilst I'm still awake, let me tell you all about a dream I had last night.
Background: I read about smoking being banned in Scottish prisons from Dec. 1, the smoking inmates are to be given free vaping gear for their first two months after which they will have to pay for it themselves.
The dream: I was in some sort of lecture room giving inmates instruction on how to vape and look after their equipment. Mostly they were interested but a few were upset with the new regulations, and it was obviously all my fault. How it finished - I have no idea.
