Back in the early (19, NOT 18!) 70s, my then wife and I spent about 3 months in England and Scotland, stayed at many "bed & breakfast" places. One, where they knew we were heading for a train early the next morning, blithely asked if we'd like to be "knocked up" in the morning. :w00t:

The brit equivalent of the middle finger is two fingers in a V. Churchhill started it as V for Victory with the palm facing outwards. It got adapted as the FU sign with the palm facing towards you. People used to say, it were good enough for Winston it's good enough for me.

In a pub you go to the bar to get beer, they don't bring it to your table. I remember working for an American boss in London. He was at a crowded noisy bar ordering beer and he was waving 2 fingers in the barman's face for 2 beers.

One French equivalent is to hold your hand with the tip of your thumb touching the tips of your middle and index finger, then move your hand up and down. You can figure out where that one came from.

I did a quick orientation last Thursday (3 hours) and I start on the floor training tomorrow. I have my fingers crossed that this job will be the job until I retire.
I will cross my fingers also

I noticed during a recent binge watch of several seasons of The Great British Bake Off that Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith (the judges, for nonfans) talked of both cookies and biscuits. For them, cookies were chewy or cakey and biscuits were crisp. Never before had I heard this distinction made.
My only question is, what the heck do they call a biscuit? A scone?

I put in a little BCF order yesterday and I have tracking but it says only that the label has been created, so it'll probably be close to end of the week when I get it.
    Notable new flavors in order:
Lemon Cream wafer CNV (first time I've tried CNV)
    Glazed Donut SC WF
    Joy FA
    Coconut Extra TFA
    salt Water Taffy FW
    Blue Raspberry TFA
    Sweet and Tart TFA

The Glazed Donut will be sft'd but I plan on using it with Joy, a little Zeppola FA, and just a touch of Sweet Dough FLV to make a plain glazed doughnut. After I feel like that tastes right, I may add some things like custard or fruit to future recipes. I have a good Brooklyn Style Doughnut recipe I found on ELR a while ago, but it's custard based and I want something else.

I have the Lemon Cream Wafer in my order also.

Love a properly made scone... much better than a biscuit.
To me, a scone is for dessert and is generally sweet, with or without things like dried fruit or nuts mixed in. And a biscuit is for savory dishes like sausage gravy or dinners.
I like a good scone too, but I also like a plain biscuit with butter and honey.

I love biscuits the same way. If you like it with butter and honey you should try it with butter and this:

That is going above and beyond for the customer. I appreciate their work ethic.

Sadly, just their idiom for a wake up call.

AND - What did "You" say . . .

As I recall, we stood there briefly with blank looks, then started laughing. And then that I'd take care of it ;)

Biscuits become delicious with butter or honey when one realizes they are out of sausage gravy.:D
I grew up on stuff like that and learned how to make sausage gravy and buttermilk biscuits before I was 10. Also pie crust, pancakes, poached eggs, french toast, egg noodles, and sugar cookies. Thanks mom!

I've heard of that but not tried it. Dark cane syrup?

Yes, it's kind of the same profile as molasses but there is a slight difference in flavor. I would say a tad lighter maybe. It kind of reminds me of sorghum syrup. Another must have for the butter and biscuit connoisseur...:)

When my wife and I were buying our previous house in Clearwater Florida we took our realtor out to breakfast with us. As usual, I ordered a full fledged meal for myself-- pancakes, eggs, home fries, bacon, country ham, and biscuits and gravy. When it was our realtor's turn she simply said a large bowl of sausage gravy.

I was perplexed... I hope this lady doesn't think I am going to share one of my biscuits with her.

I kid you not, when the food came she grabbed a spoon and ate it like soup.

Every house she showed us that day was overshadowed by her act at the breakfast table, I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Guess she really liked the gravy.

I would have done that when I was pregnant. I kid you not..I was living in Missouri at the time and every darn fast food/restaurant had it on the menu. I would have to leave for work early to grab some biscuits and gravy. For fast food I liked Hardee's version.
