Good research find.

Rayon is a decent fabric for dress-casual shirts (I think I've got a couple Armani ones, though it's been awhile since I've been to that part of my clothes closet ;)). After reading the Wikipedia blurb, I'm not sure i'd want to use rayon for vaping.

You may want to read up on what they use to extract the cellulose that goes into making rayon. Here's the manufacture process for the most common type of rayon:

Before saying one type of process is safer than another, look at the entire process from start to end.

All the more reason we need extensive lab testing for things we heat and inhale into our lungs.

This link compares various materials, but is lacking here and there for some of the info on temps and results.

You have to wonder how many silica fibers make it from a wetted wick through the tube and into our mouths. From there it's a short ride into the bronchials. I have seen photos where people have vaped with silica wicks and inhaled through a fine mesh screen over the drip tip and then viewed the accumulation under a microscope. Some fibers make it that far.

Silica looks pretty nasty under a microscope after vaping from the wick. Lots of loose fibers in the video.

How are you finding hemp for wicking?

I've seen hemp twine, and am tempted to try it out.

-- Glenn

It's hemp fibers or what they call degumped hemp but different to the twine. I find it wicks better then cotton and lasts longer, as far a flavor, I think it's better imo but not a major difference to cotton. Also it requires a little effort in preparation.

Boiling may remove germs and help dissolve oils, but I'm not sure boiling is a process to remove chemicals.. Is it?

Water is the most universally powerful solvent known to man...more substances dissolve in water than anything else.

Wow, that looks nasty.

When I think of silica wicks, I can't help thinking about silicosis. Silicosis involves dust, not fibre, but I still wouldn't want to mess around with it until some testing is done.
