Ha! It just looks like that in the picture. Its my Billow V2 so the build deck is actually really small. Its 2.5mm 7wraps of 26g Kanthal. .53 ohms. 2.5mm is as big as you can fit without it touching the chimney. I have always noticed that pictures and videos of vaping stuff always seems to look so much bigger than in person. If you saw it in person its really small!!!!

Do you guys usually dry burn your coils when they get to this point? Or do you just keep vaping if it tastes fine? Im still new to RTAs. I notice no difference in flavor.

LOL. Yeah, I'm familiar with the 500 foot box dilema! I was just ribbing ya, man. I know a few people who still prefer silica wicks over all others. I disagree with them, of course, but whatever works for them is what's best for them, right? It is hard to beat the lifespan of a silica wick though...

Which made me just think of something that backs up Jeremy's observation of rayon. Remember when we used to use silica and would think we scorched the wick, so our vape tasted like crap? Yeah, that was the coil... not the wick. Biggest difference is that we were probably using clearomizers then, and we couldn't really inspect things properly... and forget about actually cleaning the coil off. It's pretty amazing that we're seeing the same thing in a wick that is actually combustible. Even though our wicks are completely capable of bursting into flame, we're still burning juice to the coil before we can burn the wick itself.... sorry for the tangent, just kinda hit me all of a sudden...

Bingo.. That's exactly what I determined. Its was always the coil with silica and Rayon.

The difference is that silica didn't Wick fast enough to prevent gunking and self clean the coil, and allowing the burnt juice to be removed and return to a clean flavor by floods of fresh juice on the surface of coil as it heats. Kind of like putting water in a hot dirty pan it flash boils most the gunk off the pan.

At one time I likened the way Rayon works to a cross between cotton and silica the benefits of both and then some

Actually that was my very first thought... Also elluded to ku way back... Lol

Looking great!

Just keep going if you get it wet enough it will flash boil and pop the gunk right off the coil. Your not showing any speckles yet so it hasn't been wet or hot enough to eject any gunk formation it looks.

Keep vaping if it starts to taste off drip and wipe, then redrip and the flavor should clear back to normal. Most the time it's just a carbon layer. If you have a spot of gunk forming its probably a wrap that's overheating for some reason. The gunk should not be attached like normal. It should fall right off.

A micro coil is a gunk maker. Space the coil for even longer life. A micro coil creates a hot spot! Yes you make a hot spot in the middle with a touching coil. Spaced is a true even heat. Also touching retains heat and juice on the hot coil, cooking the juice like a frying pan on the coil, even and especially after the vape.

I know you were "busting my chops", LOL. That's one thing that's bad about the typed, printed, word...you couldn't hear the overdone innocence of my voice as I replied.

I think I'm morphing. Built a 2.5 mm kanthal coil in my Lemo 2 at .75 ohm. After reading above I'm glad I spaced it. I think I did a better job of wicking this time. Best my favorite juice has ever tasted and the most pleasant vape I've ever gotten from a Lemo. An old man in the foothills of the Smokies in East Tennessee has to be careful about using words like fabulous but THAT IS WHAT IT IS! Oh, I'm doing anywhere from 14 to 22 watts. I may not be an everyday tootle puffer now.

LOL! Oh, I implied the 'overdone innocence' when I read it, man! We've corresponded enough on here to know one another well enough it would appear! :)

Yep, I hadn't thought about it too much before. I pretty much understood what you were talking about when you suggested re-wetting the coils and wiping them, but it just dawned on me that I'd seen the same thing with silica. But you're right about silica not wicking as fast as rayon. I had particular problems with it because I typically use high VG juice. I did make the mistake of trying silica in a dripper... ONCE. There was no way it could keep up with my low resistance build in my mechs... then I found your rayon post and everything has be glorious ever since!

Meh... still a tootle puffer to me, Mr. Canno...
But I'm in the minority here... I typically run around 0.2 ohms and anywhere from 80-120 Watts... On my mechanical mods and drippers, anyway.
My regulated mod is currently sitting at .35 ohms and set to 27.5 Watts... that's my version of tootle puffing! :D

Thanks for the laugh about being "fabulous"! I grew up in south Mississippi and live in Texas now... that's a word rarely used in my world as well!

Hey, don't feel bad, Canno... my first regulated mod maxed out at 15W, and I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread! We all started this journey crawling and in diapers... I'm just happy that I get to use the 'big-boy' potty now!

LMAO! Same here! I used to wonder "Why would anybody want to carry that huge, ridiculous looking thing around all day?"... then I got one, and now I understand! Now I just laugh when I get strange looks in a parking lot as I vape-stroll to the store...

When I started vaping I did a rant, somewhere here on ECF, about just wanting a substitute for a cigarette, not something that looked like the relief valve for a high pressure steam vessel. I do still have some 78mm auto stick batteries around and I tried one the other day, MEH. I went through the Vamo stage, then an Innokin 134 (talk about big!). Now I've settled on box style mods, a little large but I built a low tank DNA40, sort of like a VTR, to keep it smaller. I still don't go over 30 watts, although I easily can, and still need to clean the VG film off the widows too often as it is.

Yeah, then you got me started on the Invader Mini... that thing with a Silver Play V2 tank is possibly the largest/heaviest mod I own. Or at least, i'ts very close to the size/weight of my 26650 mech tube mod. I wouldn't get rid of my Invader, though. It's happily makin' clouds even as I type this! I should have some titanium wire later this week, so I'll finally be able to get a solid, long-lasting build in it. Who knows, maybe I'll finally make the 300ml club!

Same here. The first time i tried rayon,i thought ah it's ok i guess haha, then following that huge thread,i got the wicks perfect and have never looked back.I don't pay much attention to how many ml i get on a set of wicks now,but that first perfect set went something around 150-160ml before i changed them.I bought the 3 pound box,so i have enough rayon to last me and my son the rest of our lives haha.
