A "casual" look at rayon does seem to show it is nasty stuff, all kinds of environmental hazards from its production, but we aren't producing it just using it as a wick. Manufacturing of it was banned, not the use of it, due to the toxic wastes produced and then not being properly treated and disposed of safely.
If it was unsafe, intrinsically, would it be used medically in place of cotton? I doubt it. Then again there is a difference between using it to absorb fluids in the body as opposed to using it for a vaping wick.
The fact that it is used, medically, for its absorbent properties during surgeery would seem to indicate that at least the medical grade rayon is pretty "pure", IE no residual chemicals from manufacturing.
I don't know, nor has anyone found out, how well the processing, cleaning, of Sally's is done. I'm confident enough, after using it for about a week, that it is fairly "clean" and if I start to feel otherwise I'll just boil the heck out of it before I use it.
Given that silica and fiberglass all leach shards that can be, at the least, irritating to the respiratory system I think rayon or cotton may be a much better choice.
