Yes, there have been cases in the public news of stalking via cellphone. The camera and microphone CAN be remotely activated even if the phone is off, but the battery is plugged in. This is why the US Military does not allow cellphones (or any type of electronic device really) anywhere near classified material/areas, the risk is there and doesn't require NSA level knowledge to do.

A few years ago, at one of the big IT security/hacker conferences, someone showed off a proof-of-concept that really should scare you. Basically, because of the lack of any real security in cell phones, he was able to produce his own cell tower. Cell phones will connect to the strongest signal (generally determined by location), so if you were physically close to his homemade tower (it was just a little box) your phone would authenticate to it. He could then redirect your calls, record them, refuse them, etc. Whole set up cost about 1000 USD.

Ya thats damn creepy. BUT for the portable cellphone tower, I want one now :( I could put it in my car and force all the people driving around me talking on their cell to a pre-recorded message of obnoxiously loud car collision sounds with a periodic "YOUR LIFE IS WORTH MORE THAN THIS CALL" thrown in. If it could give me a 1 block radius bubble of idiot-free driving, itd be worth every penny. Alls i'd need after that is total control of the street lights so I could pre-set my routes to always be green and I might actually start to enjoy urban driving!!

Not to mention the infinite array of nefarious uses too :p

Watch 'Hackers 2'.

It's just a radio transceiver with a laptop connected, with the right software. The software is the key though.

The left coast and north east are more prone to telling ppl how they can live than say the south, Texas or mid west.

Sure, as long as you're a straight, white male and want to live like every other straight, white male.

Is that woman who got arrested for selling a dildo in Texas still in jail, or did she serve her time already?

Good Job!!! you managed to play the race and sexual orientation card in a thread that is 65 posts long and never made any reference of any kind to that. You should check out the OUTSIDE they rant about all that stuff over there. You should find somebody there that wants to play that game.

It is amazing how records can disappear when questioned..short story long.. my daughter was puking her alcohol guts up in a fresman dorm. The police were called and she was charged with possession of a minor. I called the court (just to find out if I needed to get her an attorney). While talking, I asked how she could be charged with possession of a minor since she was not actually in possession. A month later, we go to court with all of the other previously drunk college students. Her name was never called....no record existed in the entire courthouse of anything having to do with her. Poof!!!

Does that mean I could hack into your computer and listen to conversations going on in the same room as the computer (or cellphone?)?? Thats NSA stuff right there.

Sure.... and with a simple machine language command, we can reverse the optics of your computer monitor.
Wait... you're not smiling.

Ahhh... that's better. You look so much better when you smile.

None of which answers the question: is that woman who got arrested for selling a dildo in Texas still in jail, or did she serve her time already?

Offtopic but creepier is how my iPod headphones plugged into my computer turned into a microphone when someone invited me to a voice chat on yahoo messenger and I accidently clicked yes despite not having a microphone hooked up, soon after which she informed me she could hear what was going on in the room around me.

Does that mean I could hack into your computer and listen to conversations going on in the same room as the computer (or cellphone?)?? Thats NSA stuff right there.

I was on a VOIP lecture from college once and forgot to plug in the microphone from my headphones. I was talking and being heard, but someone told me I was a little muffled. I looked down and the mic plug was dangling. The VOIP conference software picked up the headphone input and used it as the mic.

So, the answer is yes, you can be heard even if the mic isn't plugged in.

Back on the cell phone while driving topic, I agree that going to court with the records is the way to fight it.

In Ga, the state legislature just passed a ban on texting while driving. It's still legal to talk with a cell phone in your hand while driving. One of my pet peeves is the HUGE number of people who have a cell phone over their left ear when they pull out in front of me! The cell phone blocks a portion of your peripheral vision. I'd welcome a hands-free law in my state. Tests have proved that awareness and understanding of what is going on around you is impaired by something on the order of 50%, even with hands free operation. It's just distracting to have someone talking to you while you are making decisions about when it is safe to pull out into traffic. Not to mention that people are making turns with one hand on the wheel and the other blocking their vision.

I don't see cellphones any more dangerous than having on board GPS and fiddling around with it. So if your gonna ban cellphone use in cars, require ppl to have GPS turned off as well. I know the goal is to have zero car crash fatalities in the entire US but when people wake up from that dream you realize that will never happen. Buy a bigger car or truck and deal with feeding it gas if you wanna feel safer on the roads, because the larger vehicle wins most of the time, or just stay off them and take the bus.

Myself personally, as long as your not doing drugs, driving drunk, keeping your eyes on the road and obey highway laws, then who am I to tell someone else what to do. Accidents happen plain and simple.

All the traffic laws are created to save the insurance companies money which they don't pass back onto you and as a stealth tax to fund whatever the cities and states feel like doing with it.

Nothing like starting your day by getting falsely accused of something.

Got pulled over by the CHP while puffing on my BoxMod this morning. Cop says I was using a cell phone and not the BoxMod and proceeded to issue me a ticket. Sure, there was a cell phone in the car but it hasn’t been used it in over 3-months. I guess I could get a copy of the cell phone records and try to fight it in court but what a hassle.

Sure I can easily understand how it might look like I was using a cell phone (especially while resting my elbow on the arm rest and boxmod at neck height), but this cop was a total D-HEAD and was 100% convinced I was talking on my cell phone when in fact I WAS NOT!!!

I haven’t dealt much with the law before and this seems more of a principal issue than a money issue. And it’s going to come down to his word over mine (along with maybe the phone records for a phone that's actually not even mine along with the boxmod itself).

Any suggestions and/or advice?
Grrrrr....

Sorry I have not read through the thread but is there any updates? tell me you are fighting this!

If I do this, what does...

doing drugs,driving drunk

have to do with anything, especially in light of...

Accidents happen plain and simple.

Weak logic Kung Fu here...

Yes atavanhalen... I go to court on July 29th with phone records (and boxmod) in hand.

Would be a kicker if the court's security guards won't let me in with the boxmod:facepalm:

Will post the outcome.

RIP: Columbo:(

The cop probably won't even show. But, you have to be prepared anyway.

I had something similar happen. I don't want to get into the details, but I was basically charged with something I didn't do. Let me just say it was a lot worse than a cell phone ticket. I went to court fully prepared to fight, but summarily had the case dismissed when the cop didn't show. My feeling was the cop knew he was wrong, but wasn't going to concede at the time. His attitude was, "I pulled you over for something I thought you did, you're going to jail". So, he just didn't show up for court. Needless to say, I was relieved about that one.

"In fact sadly I support the hands free cells laws everywhere because I've watched people be oblivious to what's going on around them because they are too engrossed in their phone."

If I thought that passing laws would make people less oblivious I might be for more of them.... unfortunately I don't think it is working.
