I think I'll give the buff puff a try. I did the blue pad one last night, and my throat felt a little scratchy when I went to bed, like it had a residue on it.

I had that scratchy throat once with the green scour pad - didn;t like that either. Had it once with the blue pad, but once without - I thought maybe it was just too much vaping, too. Didn;t get the scratchy throat last night with the face scrubber.

I originally attributed it to 'condensation' within the cart after 30-40 vapes; but now, I'm not so sure.

Well, yesterday this mod seemed fine (while at home); however, it didn’t travel well today. Now, I know what a leaky cart looks like! Thank G@d for Manual Batteries!!

3/8 x 3/8 was too small. Upon examination; I can see through the ‘fabric’ of the little cube AND the weave loosens up if you take it out for refilling. I think I need to cut these a little larger and compress them into place for a better plug (might last longer too, if the fabric loosens a bit). No evidence that the atomizer burns the ‘blue’ material.

I started getting leaking with the kitchen pads, too. I don't think it springs back as well after repeated compression taking it in and out of the cart for refills.

What kind and where did you get the "Buff Puff" you are using?

Walgreen's generic facial cleansing sponge:
Facial Cleansing Sponges | Walgreens

Here are my results for day 1.

1. No leaks

2. Used 1 cart all day riding in my car on a 300+ mile trip. Changed batteries out 3 times but used same cart all day.

3. When I changed my cart out it was dry.

4. Consistent vapor through out usage

I did notice that the filler (puff buff) was crispy when checked it when I got home. I'm thinking that 1 to 2 usages of same filler plug before discarding. I pre loaded 10 carts for quick swapping last night. That way when I'm out I do not need to worry about pulling the plug to refill. Not that they would be needed but I like to plan for all contingencies.

It is a huge improvement compared to the stock cart. Overall I give it a 99.9% success. Minus .1% for the crispy issue. :thumb:

Hmmm...weird. i haven't had it get crispy on me at all yet. Been using the same plug for 2 full days now.

Kristin and I are going to have words. And they aren't going to be nice words.

So I go to Walgreens today looking for the ghey Buff-Puff. I walk up and down all the feminine aisles... and no, I won't ask for help. I see a generic "Buff-Puff" looking thing.. but I'm thinking to myself "Nah... Kristin would only use and recommend the genuine, certified item. No generic for me!".

So I leave Walgreens and trek over to Walmart. Same story... up and down the feminine aisles... far, far away from the motor oil and fishing supplies. No luck. Nothing but generic Buf-Puff clones. Not good enough for me and my prized 510.

Then I gander over that the other thread.. and find out that my precious Kristin is actually using a generic "equivalent", and we can't possibly hope to recreate her results. If ours don't work as good.. she'll say that we have the wrong no-name Chinese import clone.

I'm getting in my car right now... driving North.. and thumpin' her on her lil' noggin'.

(You watch... next she'll tell us that Tampons or feminine pads are the bomb... and that Summer's Eve cleans attys best!)

Hey! Not fair! 8-o I said a few times in this thread that I was using the Walgreen's brand! (Even posted a link: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...oir-straw-plug-mod-rsp-mod-14.html#post723605) I did use a picture of the brand name stuff, because the Walgreen's pic only showed it IN the box.

Ummm...nope, tampons would be too absorbant, lol! (No, I haven't tried it, but someone had started a gag thread to see if they could get people to do it!)

So, I took a closer look at this face sponge and if you look at it from the side, it definitely has layers, but they are interwoven, so they don't really pull apart - it's more like a honeycomb accordian - like those honeycomb ball decorations you can buy at the party store. I think this is why it keeps springing back to fill the cart opening and sort of "channels" the liquid to the atty without flooding it. Unlike the kitchen pads, which is a similar material but a much different weave.

Now after 2 days - still no reduction in performance.

I have really been enjoying this thread! Not only am I getting useful advice on how to modify my cartridges, but I'm getting a good laugh out of it too. The thought of using tampons and Summer's Eve on my e-cig made me laugh out loud.

One thing, though. Aren't most of us in the U.S.? What's with the "mm" measurements? I thought we pretty much gave the rest of the world the finger on that and said "No, we're sticking with our inches, feet and yards".....I had to search all over the house for something to measure with in metric and thank goodness I had an app on my iPhone for that.:D

LOL! Yeah, I know, but the sizes we are looking at are so small, it's hard to divide it in inches for me. I have a basic school ruler in my kitchen drawer that is inches on one side and millimeters on the other and could just be more accurate with the millimeter side! :D

This thread has taken on a life of its own. Someone just walking in will be like "what the ???" :?:

Especially since we've mentioned greenies, blue pads, plugs, tampons, and buff puffs in our discusion.

We are hard core!!

PS I'm starting to believe we have an addiction. How low will we go? :pop:

Yeah, between kitchen and feminine products, you'd think this was the women's room, lol!

But hey - most guys would probably not even know about or even think about the face scrub!

How's it working for you Maxxdog? Mine is still working great!

I get about 11-12 drops with every refill, still no leaking and the plug hasn't dried out or gummed up yet.

I've been challenged in another thread to see if it can last a week!

So if you notch the bottom of the straw does the liquid flow up into the straw as well or is the straw just wasted space.
The straw forms a tube in the middle of the cart - I fill up the straw. You can get about 10-12 drops when filling. It's a little less than other fillers, but other fillers that fill the whole cart "hold on" to 4-6 drops worth of liquid and never let it go, so you have to refill or top off more often. With this, you use up about 10-11 drops every time, so you refill less and never have to top off!

No, no - he was giving me a hard time because I was switching plug material on a daily basis - he just means to use the same plug for a week - not make a cart last a week! LOL
What is he, crazy?

No TRUE cartridge modder would use the same device for an ENTIRE WEEK.

A true cart modder would constantly be tweaking, and roaming dollar stores and hardware stores, eyes constantly moving to find The Next Big Improvement.

I have 17 different filler materials lying around, just because I listen to people like you and eclypse.

LMAO!! Yeah, that's probably true - but I guess I don't consider myself a modder - just tweeking other people's ideas, lol!

If it goes a week without losing performance, it may be the holy grail of cart mods, though! :D

What I was wondering if you punch holes in the straw then wouldn't it fill most of the cart.

I don't know - give it a try! Some people suggested a straw cut lengthwise, as well, so it forms like a "C" in the cart and you take away 1/2 the straw space. It's just to hold up the plug and keep it from being pushed into the cart by the atty and by negative air pressure.

You have to punch big holes. Surface tension around small holes can actually hold back drops of juice. I once used 2 coffee stirrers and found that juice would get "stuck" in the middle of the straws, so I moved to a full-sized straw which is large enough so that surface tension can't grip.

I just make 2 big notches in the bottom

IMHO, the best filler material would be 1mm thick. I liked the blue Marineland stuff because it was only 5mm thick - I still have to test with your Scotchbrite stuff - and I'm bummed that it's 3mm thicker than the blue stuff.
Forget the Scotch Brite - go straight for the face cleaning sponge! It works a LOT better. Similar material, but the expanding accordian property it has, that the kitchen scrubbers don't, makes it superior to wicking and longer lasting!

You could probably notch the top of the straw, as well, if you want to delete some more material. The pointy "crown" would still hold up the plug. I don't think it would affect flow - just add more space for a wee bit more liquid.
