The spring always keeps the pad pressed against the bridge of the atty. And yes, the spring does compress a bit.... pinching the pad and squeezing it. The amount that it is pinched and squeezed controls how much liquid will flow through it. The more you squeeze the pad, the less the liquid will flow.
I used this same mechanism and mod on a standard 510 cart some time ago.. but haven't revisited it recently. It should work the same.... although I find it to be just a little bit tougher to make the plugs for the 510.

I'll have to revisit the blue pad. I couldn't find the layers.
One thing to make the BP easier is to use a scissors and cut off a 4mm strip. Much easier to work with then.
P.S. I'm off on a tangent right now... trying to machine up a cartridge that resolves the "difficulty in refilling" challenge that is associated with this and other "plug style" mods.

Wouldn't you be able to cut the plug the same way and just trim a flat piece off two sides, instead of one? Or is the diameter of the 901 that different?
I think you're right on that one.... I'll take a look. The difficulty was probably only in my imagination.
I have been trailing along with this thread. I don't have a Walgreens, so I used the straw/blue scotch pad and made adjustments for an 801..
Using the inverted V straw seems to be working better for me than the Spring /Plug mod I was trying.
One worry I have:
I use a silver bullet at home and tend to stand it on end and wander off, leaving it to fend for itself.
I have "come back" several times and have juice dribbling from the bottom of the atomizer and pooling on the SB. Aack! (I am using the full thickness of the scotch pad and my juice is super thick VG)
Do I need to take apart the atomizer and cart anytime I leave it for an extended time? I'd hate for this to dribble in my handbag or car seat.
This dribbling issue has made wary of taking this mod on the road.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm sorry, I misspoke. The plug is actually 5 x 8, exactly 1mm larger than the cart on both sides. I want a little compression to safegard against leaks. The cart is really working good too.
I've adjusted my juice mix and have tamed the harshness at 5 volts. It wasn't the cart at all it was the juice. I reduced the PG and PGA. Now the only problem I have is overheating the atty because I am vaping too hard.

Well.... that last night I found some time and fired up the lathe. I cranked out two creations.
One is the "super tanker", which is a spring-and-pad based cartridge that holds about 75% more liquid than a standard 901 cartridge. That one worked out perfectly and will become my standard cartridge for my daily at-work vape.
The second project was a "quick flip" spring-and-pad cartridge that allows you to recharge quickly through the mouthpiece end without removing the cartridge from the atomizer. It was somewhat predictable... but it is/was a dismal failure. Once you break the vacuum on the "back side" of the pad, the entire contents of the cartridge will run right through the pad into the atomizer.
Oh well...... it was fun anyway!

Yeah, I'm kinda bummed that it didn't work. It was pretty slick and looked good.... just didn't work! The other downside is that you'd probably want one and I'm not sure if I was readily up to making another one!
Welp, I'm back to my original RSP mod with the BP!! (Full, notched straw.)
Evrything else I try, the plug gets sucked into the atty when it starts to get dry - makes me crazy!!
Scottbee - what size hole punch did you say you used? I didn't like the blue scrubbie as much as the BP, but I'm willing to go looking back into it...

The punch size is 5/16". I picked one up at my local ACE hardware. It's the perfect size for the 901, and I think you're 100% correct that it's the right size for the 510 as well.

Sorry, but I find the blue Scoth Brite plug easier to work with than either the blue foam or the Buff Puff. And yes, I have tried them both.
The punch size is 5/16". I picked one up at my local ACE hardware. It's the perfect size for the 901, and I think you're 100% correct that it's the right size for the 510 as well.

Well, the original RSP is working great. Just dried out a cart and the plug stayed put! Something about the more solid straw keeps the plug in place - probably negative pressure. Can fill 12 drops and the cart dries. Straw is 10mm with 4 notches. Plug is 5mm wide X 10mm long, then trimmed off about 1-2mm above the cart - which would make it about 9-10mm deep.
Crapsticks.... pictures are on the camera, camera is at home. I thought I had already put them on my FTP server. Brain damage.

Where at Ace did you find that punch? I've spent hours roaming hardware stores looking for that exact item but can't find it. Any help you can give me locating at would be appreciated.
So happy with this mod again! Guess if it ain't broke - don't fix it! LOL
I'll look into the blue pad again, since it is a little easier to cut the plug consistantly, but this BP works so well when you have it set up, it's worth the trouble!!

My ACE had them over by the hammers and other things that hurt when you hit a person with them. Same place where they had center punches and hand chisels. The punches are made by "General" and they had them in about 10 different sizes.... shrinked to a card and hanging on the peg board.
Hope that helps. If it doesn't, next time I'm up there I can get the SKU.
