Your logo would be more compelling if it were easier to read. Right now the Sagewood Glass text is hard to distinguish from the background illustration. The overlapping words and images compete with each other for the attention of the audience. The dark orange letters are almost camouflaged.

Your current logo doesn't reflect who you really are. You and your partner make extraordinary art and you're developing a thoughtful, creative, and apparently successful business strategy. I know you're running a mom-and-pop operation, and it's charming that you have a sentimental attachment to your friend's design. But your logo shouldn't look homespun. It should be cleaner, more modern, more visually striking, and definitely more legible.

Having a strong logo is crucial. Potential customers will check out your logo and draw all kinds of inferences about your business. I think your existing logo might make them draw the wrong inferences, but that's because I've reviewed over a thousand posts in this thread, so I have a better understanding of what you do. In an instant, the right logo can make your target think "these are cool creative artists who sell great products."

I don't know how to post my alternative logo design on the forum. Maybe someone here can help me out with that. Here's a link to the file:

I hope I'm not offending you with my criticism. In some ways, logos are art, and opinions about art are subjective. But there are also scientific principles of logo design. If you follow the rules, you get a better result.

I'm not trying to sell you anything. I just have fun designing logos. I've designed a logo for you because I'm impressed by your work and I want to help you become as successful as you deserve to be.

That's very kind of you and we'd certainly be happy to take a look, but we're honestly pretty satisfied with our logo as it is, and it was generously created by a dear friend of ours...

Respectfully, fisty, I think you're missing the point of what a logo is meant to do. You can't use a logo to tell the whole story of a business. What kind of fire they use, what kind of circular motion is part of their production process -- that's too much info to try convey with a logo.

A logo is a symbol. Think of some logos that have been around for decades, logos we see all the time and recognize immediately. Apple's logo doesn't tell you anything about the unibody construction of their laptops. The CBS stylized eye logo doesn't really have anything to do with TV. Target's logo has no obvious connection to their business.

Good logos are simple. They shouldn't have to be analyzed and interpreted.

Other than the word "Glass" that logo doesn't say glass, imply glass, or have anything at all to do with their business. Where as their current one shows the fire of the heating, the blue of the glass, and circular motion used to form these objects. Sorry to say, that design would be a significant step backwards.

As far as the logo / banner is concerned, I definitely appreciate the constructive input and feedback from both sides. The perspectives and opinions of our customers is very important, as are using good graphic design / marketing principles. For now, I don't think we'll be making any changes, but we are always open to new and creative ideas in all aspects of our business.

It's really cool that you saw this, Fisty! Check out these pics of Mark blowing glass that I captured a while back . Mind you, this was after the logo had already been designed. I saw these pics and realized the logo was even more perfect than I had realized!

You're contradicting yourself. Their current logo conveys who they are quite well.. in one nifty circular swirl. They could take away all the text and it would still be effective. You're also contradicting my college professor.

Apple's logo doesn't tell you anything about the unibody construction of their laptops. The CBS stylized eye logo doesn't really have anything to do with TV. Target's logo has no obvious connection to their business.

Except that Apple's logo is an apple, and Target's logo is a target, and you use your eyes to watch CBS on TV.

I do agree with this point partially. I have no issue with the color of the text or really the flowing shape of it either, but it could be improved on by using a similar font that has smooth edges rather than the kind of bumpy edges it has now. And either intensifying the white glow behind or changing it to a strong centered drop shadow would increase readability without loosing any of the style of it.

I think Mr. Kai shouldn't email you unless you promise to post pics. :D

(only kidding -- I just love seeing them in their new homes)
Oh you can bet I'll have some pics to post I promise. >,<

You will be receiving an email tomorrow! Your piece is done, I just need to take a pic...

*Happy dance*
