I have spent most of my life living away from my family - like opposite coasts since I was 21. For the past 11 years I have split the difference by being in TN. Makes no difference. I thought it was me, but it is just a fact of environment. When you live far away and only speak on the phone or occasionally, you lose the day to day interactions that make up a close relationship (with most people). You are 'out of the loop' for a lot of stuff. Hence you do not have that 'I saw you pick your nose yesterday' inside knowledge.
I used to go from my home in CA to CT once every couple of years. So much stuff had happened in my life and when I would visit it seemed like they all were still talking and arguing about the same old stuff at each visit. It does make you feel disconnected. It is perfectly normal.
It is going to be a tough visit/trip no matter what you do. Just do the best you can and do not take anything said too much to heart. Emotions are very, very raw right now, for everyone. My hugs and prayers are with you all.

We'll with family for a tragic funeral. The worst part is I don't feel like I belong because I have now realized that I don't have anything in common with my beloved loving sister in law.
