I don't know whether it's "stupid" or not, but most tanks I really like, I have multiples of, and quite often they are both pressed into service.
So, you have to decide if this is a tank that's worth it to you (and I have certain tanks I have a BACKUP of, in case anything goes horribly wrong.)
I don't think there is anything stupid or wrong about backups. If it's a tank you want to use for a while that has drop in coils either a) make sure it's pretty popular or b) buy a fairly large supply of coils for it, enough to justify the purchase or both.
I'd suggest maybe buying some tanks you know you like, as well as a few new things to try that interest you, if that's all possible based on your pocket book, etc.
