Thanks. I've been on that thread too, not in a while though. I love the tech talk here. I was hoping thebloke would do some more testing on tc mods. I have shinyitus but I'm not quite sure which shiny mod to buy next.

What's the nicest TC mod out there now? Still the SX M class or?
I think TheBloke is gone for a bit right now.
I've been exploring the DNA200 lately and I'm impressed with it. I also have the SX M class and that performs well but the ability to customize EVERYTHING with the Escribe software and the DNA 200 is very impressive.

The dna 200 is a tinker device. I definitely find myself playing with the settings on my computer just to see what I can do.

Don't like the TCR curve? Design a new one. Want other screens? Make them. Wanna see what max w you pulled on last draw? Make it show up...

You can tailor it to almost exactly what your heart desires.

I would say it's the top dog right now.

Heard the dna200 is a battery hog.....any truth to that?

If it is then it's another step backward.
I hate the fact that they've chosen LiPo since the size/capacity ratio isn't near as good as Li-Ion which means we're getting either bulkier devices or shorter vape time.
If it turns out to be a battery hog then that's making it even worse.

Well I don't vape any different power levels on the 200 than I did on other devices but I don't find any problem that could be described as making the device a battery hog. In fact it charges so fast that it's been a convenience compared to my "old days" with other batteries.

On the other hand if you like to play with all the power the DNA 200 can deliver then of course you are going to see it deplete the battery faster.

Well, you're using a different power source so the difference wouldn't be something that immediately draws attention since you can't compare it directly to an 18650.
What capacity does your LiPo have?

Don't know yet for sure as I need more time but I would say it's not very different from a dna 40 if you use equivalent vape settings.

Woah, easy. Lipo is far superior to lion in terms of energy density. In rc there is a reason to use lipo for power packs and lions for TX / RX. A lipo holds a much better power to weight ratio and doesn't bulge to high discharge curves. Try 70C on the best lion in the world and see what happens.

Our old 18650 lions are convenient and hold a good charge and power to weight ratio but they are no match for a good lipo. A lipo has obviously disadvantages but lack of power isn't one of them.

Tony, I'm not really interested in super high discharge rates because I don't need them.
I find capacity much more important.
I've been looking into LiPos and they all seem bulky to me. If I want a device that can be compared to a single 18650 the LiPo needs to be 800mAh minimum and not take up more space (including cables and connectors).
What worries too me is the way they connect to the device. Forget quickly unscrewing the cap and swapping batteries. You have to connect 2 plugs to 2 connectors. All this will put restrictions on a design. That's the reason you can't change the battery on the Evic VT. Do we really want APV's with fixed batteries? I know I don't.

From that perspective yeah, lions are more convenient but with today's boards, where power is needed, lipo becomes the preferred method.

As long as I can get a full day out of a mod, I don't really care if Batts are swappable.

I did modify a mini hana to take a 18650 but only because I wanted 2500+ mah in a matchbox sized mod. Power requirements weren't my priority.

Tony, are you sure that 2 18650s won't fit in an Evic VT60? I bought 3 VTs hearing that I could fit 18650s in there when the lipos poop out. Specifically 2 Sammy 25Rs for a combined 4800mah.
Only two sure things in life: death and taxes

However I have serious doubts they will fit. The board isn't only placed laterally but also on the top, forming a sort of L shape board. The remaining space (occupied by the lipo now) might be too short to support two lions plus wiring but I've been proved wrong at least on a weekly basis... :)

Interesting draft article. Still don't see the importance of rating all batteries in watt/hrs instead of mah. It's easy enough to convert from one to the other if you really want to know how long a batt will last at a given wattage. Most peeps just figure that out by experience anyway. I had a little ego/evod style batt that I didn't beleive the mah rating on because it just seemed too small in size... the batt itself was marked in watt/hrs. It converted to the rated mah spot on. Can't wait for the full dna200 article...should be an excellent read.

Yeah with more info finally coming out (seriously, he points out that Evolv lacked a launch program and education, WTF?!) I'm starting to get interested. Though as far as Whiteout goes, I'm still holding out for the Ares. My GV Boxer DIY should suffice for quite a while.

I kinda like the Wh approach for simple comparison but the arrogance of the post made me sad :(

Besides, it is not clear to me why he used nominal(?) V and Ah for the LiPo and nominal V and smaller than nominal Ah (2500vs. 2200) for 25R in his calculation.

Let alone the maths behind this statement:
'..... 1300mAh 3S pack inside the Whiteout ....... that puts the LiPo properly ahead!' *

1300mAh 3S LiPo pack, 1300mAh x 11.1V / 1000 = 14.43 Wh
dual 18650 series box, Samsung 25Rs, 2200(sic.)mAh x 7.4V / 1000 = 16.28 Wh
And those are his numbers. With nominal 2500mAh 25Rs would clock @ 18.5Wh

Bottom line:
I don't really know if any of the numbers above are relevant at all as we haven't got vape-like discharge test result on hand. (for a specific LiIon and generic(?) LiPo). Don't really care either. Usage will tell.
But still like the Wh approach even if it is like car's fuel consumption figures. Don't refer to real figures but makes comparison possible. Sort of:)

If memory serves, 2200mah is a Sony VTC4, one of the most popular batteries. Unfortunately, Googling it is not turning up consistent numbers. Shops padding the real specs has gotten out of hand lol.

I do believe he was taking into account the capabilities of the chip. We know from past experience DNA chips are really good on battery. We also know that YiHi isn't quite as good. I can speak from first hand experience that a single battery DNA40 is still pretty good compared to a dual battery SX350J.

All that said, I'm not a DNA fanboy. In fact, I really don't like them that much after all of my dealing with their products. Currently rocking a SX350J and loving it.
