I've been doing yard work at the MIL's house so I haven't gotten on the elliptical. Dropped some more weight though. Raking, trimming, hauling.... Adds up to exercise. ;)

Any physical work is workout worthy! If I do something extra out of the norm, I count it as added workout calories.

I was supposed to start tabata yesterday but volunteered to help do some road work and ended up shoveling stone and dirt for about 6 hours. Figured I burned somewhere in the neighborhood of 2200 calories. I was drained yesterday evening... Didn't even have the gas to get up and run this morning.

Didn't feel guilty though. Felt good!

You know those two 1 min sprints at 8mph I did yesterday? Oh my freakin' legs.. I think I'm too old for sprints..:(

HA! Good for you.

Remember that your heart appreciates that it's not forgotten in your workouts!!

Have you tried cycle sprints-walk-runs? I do 1:2:4 ratio, i.e sprint for 30 sec, walk for 60 sec, run/jog for 2 minutes. My theory (and I don't know if this a real theory, so please consult your DR or at least people smarter than me) is to stress the heart (high intensity), try and get my heart rate under control (recovery walk) and then slowly build my heart rate up with the run before I start all over again with a brief High-intensity "sprint", etc...

After doing it twice a week for 20 minutes each session for 1 month I saw a 10 beat/minute change in my resting (before I get out of bed) heart rate. I've seen my resting HR steadily slow down since I started running, but never as dramatic a drop as that.

Worth thinking about maybe. :)

That's very similar to many hiit programs, makes the exercise more efficient. A lot of researchers (if you believe them) say you can cut a workout time in half by doing intervals like this, still getting the same benefits (not that you have to, but if you're pressed for time)

Started Tabata today:

15 minute warm up on treadmill (4.2 mph @ 0 incline, raising .2mph and .5 incline every minute)*

Eight sets of 20 seconds of work (with 10 sec of rest in-between) of:
-Push-ups
-Dumbell flat-bench
-Incline dumbbell fly

2 mile treadmill cool down @6.8 mph

I'm zapped. For all that got in a workout today or that stayed healthy because they were sore from yesterday or plan a workout tomorrow... a tip of my newest post-workout drink, Bush Crack Beer, to you! Cheers.

*I call these "7&7's" because my last minute is 7 mph at 7 incline. It's much harder than it sounds.

Was just thinking, since the elliptical is supposed to simulate running without the pressure on your joints, I wonder if a program like couch2-5k would work for it... Hmmm

I can't imagine that it wouldn't. As long as you picked your "metric" before hand and found an equivalency in the C25K program to work against. It should workout fine (<-- see what I did there?).

Sounds to me like someone is going to test this out for us...? :)

I tailored this from an old marathon workout I used to do, but it was "race pace" - "jog" - "run" and the ratio was applied to distance rather than time, but the concept of HIIT is similar to my "heart" sprints.

I've heard of HIIT, but never really delved into it because I'm generally pretty happy with my workouts. I could also stand to shave a few minutes of my gym time though... :)

Well, I won't be doing it again soon, good for my heart or not- my calves still hurt and that was on Sunday!

Just checked my BP/pulse.. 15 min post workout, 100/59 pulse 62. I'll try to check it again in the morning.

Wow! That's great post-workout BP & pulse! Good for you.

I'd check for a week every morning as soon as you wake up (I always forget) and average to get a better approximation of your resting heart rate. I feel like yours is going to be pretty good. :)

You have to tell us, or at least me, because if it's better than mine I'll start working out harder to "win". I know it's crazy but I like to have the lowest resting heart rate. Sometimes, that's the motivation I need to give a little extra.

Also, I may be crazy. :)

For comparison
Today I did 40 minutes. The first mile at no resistance, the rest..resistance set at 2.
Distance 4.970. I tried to do the RPM average of 60. Came close but ended up with 58 average rpm.

The last 2.5 minutes were shaky LOL Only burned 274 calories.

Today: 40 minutes
5.173 miles
62 average RPM
286 calories burned

The first half mile - no resistance
After that first half mile, boosted the resistance to 2 for the rest of the first 10 minutes
20 minutes at a resistance of 3
10 minutes resistance back down to 2

Crunches (2 reps of ten) and weights also done.

I'm beat.

68.4 lbs lost. 4.6 lbs to go. This running is just melting the pounds away. I'll probably make my goal before March 16th (my starting date last year). And then I can spare the board with all these numbers. Y'all have been very patient and supportive.

No, no, no, no.... I like the constant stream of descending numbers. It's makes me happy!

Pretty soon you're going to have to carry around soup cans in your pockets on windy days so you don't blow away! :)

Day off today

I like the sound of that. Sadly I'll be cutting wood all afternoon tomorrow and probably all day Saturday to get ready for my annual Winter Beach Bonfire. Our motto this year is: "You can see it from space!"

My two off days are going to be spent working (probably) harder and longer than I would in the gym... Dang! :(
