How to fly the flag on Memorial Day
Memorial Day is our national day of remembrance of those who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces. The holiday evolved from Civil War-era “Decoration Days,” when the nation decorated the graves of fallen soldiers.
On Memorial Day, a U.S. flag should be raised fully, signifying the unceasing presence of our military. Then, the flag is immediately lowered to half-staff position until noon, in memory of the men and women who have fallen in service to the nation. Finally, the stars and stripes should be raised to full staff for the rest of the day, symbolic of raising the memory of those who have passed and our resolution to continue our fight for liberty.
