Looks like the kind of town that could be the home of a super powered alien from a planet that blew up, who was found by a farmer and his wife and raised as their child, until he grew up and moved to a big city to become a reporter to disguise his true identity.

Around here, they'll squeeze in a "field" in a large lot.
There ARE a lot of farms between here and where I live, and the AF base does sit around a lot of farm fields, so yeah...what you had said would work.
