It's been awhile since I read the book, but I think she was a formally trained chef.
She used to work on yachts as a chef.
I just looked at her recipe, her roux takes 25 to 35 minutes it says...she says that gumbo "can, and should" take all day to make.
I know you like to cook, if you can find a good used copy for cheap on Amazon, check it out, I bet you'd like it.
Several drink recipes in there too.
ETA: I guess she's re-released it with some updates.

Well, I think both you AND OBG like good food, so cooking is kind of a must, unless you have deep pockets for really great restaurants.
We hardly ever go to restaurants unless we're traveling, my DH loves to cook, and he's much better than most restaurants around here.
So, we eat at home.
Well finally got my chili and boy was it good...my nose is still running!
