I do cold maceration in PG for twelve weeks. Try to get as much flavor as I can, without the tobacco degenerating too far.
I'll go more than 8 weeks to the extent I can withstand the wait. I would prefer 12, but my minimum will be 8. Gotta see how I do when the time comes. I may steal 10mls at 8 and let the rest go on for awhile longer. :)

Once you have a couple hundred milliliters of extract on hand, waiting is no longer an issue. How to give it all away becomes the problem.
Also, when I started I was intent on squeezing every last drop I could from each extract I was filtering. Now, if I get half of a mason jar of clean extract then I am satisfied.

I admit I'm kind of looking for a homerun. That means if there is just one of the six that fits the description then I will be thrilled. :) I mean, the tobacco + PG is about $5 to make a batch. How much $$ did I blow buying vendor juice to see if I liked it...don't want to think about it.

I've tried maybe 40 or so different tobacco flavors. Learning which tobacco, type, strength, blends, top notes (or not) narrows the search. I now have maybe a six flavors I love and maybe another another six or seven more I am quite comfortable with.
But there have been others that were horrible to me.
Trial and error eventually has its rewards.

A .300 batting average is pretty good. A lot better than mine. :)

Daughters & Ryan Ramback - Pipes and Cigars

Extracted (cold maceration) - Winter of 2020
Mixed @ 10% (30/70 w/ 10mg nicotine) - April 2020

I thought I would get away from the Virginia/ Burley/ whatever blends I have extracting, and try a Turkish blend. So I ordered the Ramback Gold. This is not an English blend built around Latakia, but rather a blend built around Izmur tobacco. Mixed with a little Virginia tobacco just to sweeten it up a little.
After 10 weeks of soaking, filtering out and 27 days after mixing, I have a cigarette tobacco taste. Not so much Marlboro vs. Winston vs. Camel, but just a regular cigarette taste. Something like you might expect from Doral or a generic brand. Fairly mild and not offensive. The Turkish Izmur is the star here. Whatever Virginia is in the mix is in the background. Probably quite popular with the Roll-You-Own (RYO) cigarette crowd.
It is my opinion that it is probably not even fair to compare this to a quality VaPer like LA Red or Anniversary Kake, or a quality blend like Peter Stokkebye's 84 Turkish or H&H Virginia Spice. This is not offensive in any way though. It is smooth, mild and a little tasty as cigarette tobaccos go.
Daughter's and Ryan supposedly built their company catering to the RYO crowd. This is promised to be departure into the pipe tobacco sales, but apparently they didn't't go very far from their roots.

So, I brought the Ramback Gold with me to work today. As my taste buds adapt to it, the Virginia is coming through now. It's still a Turkish base, with a cigarette aftertaste, but at least the Virginia does sweeten it a bit.
Someone once told me "Vape it 'til you like it !". Don't know if I will truly like this, but it becomes a little more bearable as I get into it.

Pop, you linked us to Lab Depot for filters a bit back. TLD™ Grade 42 Quantitative Filter Paper, Ashless

How do you know the micron size? It doesn't say best I can see these days. They seem a bit on the expensive side compared to Amazon. Though Amazon is out of stock till May 9.

Yea, they are a little expensive. I bought the 12.5 cm diameter thinking they would work for gravity feed in a funnel, but that didn't work do well. But 12.5 cm. is just big enough to cut two AeroPress filters out of one lab filter- barely. Maybe the 7 cm. would be better ? It has a flow rate of 2.5um (somewhere around 2 macron, I believe), and is ashless. Seems to work for me. You have tried my extracts, so you would know how clean they are.

Also, which is better for filtering our extracts...quantitative or qualitative filter paper?

Now you're reaching beyond my knowledge on the subject, I just know I always wanted ashless (why use paper that has ash if you are trying to remove particles ?) Here is a link to a very short thread about filter paper.

Filter Paper Questions
I’m running mine thru a coffee filter first. Then I was going to run it thru a 5 micron reuseable filter then end with a 2 micron ashless filter. If gravity feed takes forever then maybe I’ll press it if I can. I don’t have an aeropress. I have your basic French press. Thanks for the head’s up about the gravity feed. I’ll have to measure the french press and order accordingly. Actually, I don’t think Amazon is that much cheaper. That Lab store is competitive.
